Windows 7 installation

Hey guys.
Okay so I have downloaded Windows 7 RC and I now want to install it. Now, I want to put w7 on my extra HDD which has no partition. Does anyone know how to make a DVD or Flash drive bootable?

copy pasted from my notes.

command for copying vista DVD to flash drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f E:\

d: being source (DVD / ISO image on Virtual drive)
E: being destination drive (flash drive)

I'm not sure, but i think the flash drive needs to be FAT32

Go into command prompt, then do the follwoing:

enter "diskpart" then "list disk" then the number of the flash drive, eg. "select disk 1" then:

"clean"
"create partition primary"
"select partition 1"
"active"
"format fs=fat32"
"assign"
"exit"

Then you do the "xcopy a:*.* /s/e/f b:"

Wheres a: is the source (virtual drive) and b: being the flash drive.

After that its done. You may have to set the boot device priority in BIOS first.

Yes, but this is for a bootable DVD, hence the NTFS format

By the way it worked for me, and I rarely ever work with command promt.

if your installing Windows 7 on another HDD why not just run the .ISO through a Virtual Drive say DAEMON Tools? the setup gives you the options where to install. that's the way i did it.

But you can't run setup.exe and do a clean installation. If you want to start fresh (reformat) you need it on another disk.

Generally speaking most .iso files are bootable CD/DVDs when it comes to operating systems. If you use MagicISO, and simple load the ISO before burning, it can tell you if it is bootable.

If you dont want to use a flash drive download ImgBurn (free) and use that - its pretty much fool proof and does an excellent job.
