i7 or not i7?
Do you guys think it would be worth buying i7? I will mostly use it for gaming...
If I do get an i7, I'll probably go with something like this or else, I think I would go with PII 720BE... If I do, I'll probably save 200$...

Why did you start a whole new thread? You could have just added this to the thread you linked to, to bump it.
Anyway, I would go with the i7. Personally I am going to wait for the Octocore chips.

I am tempted by the i7 too... but isn't it going to be a waste for me? I'm only gonna game... but I guess the i7 can be kept longer, though I'm not sure by how much... and 1375$ is a hefty price still :S

After everything, I think the i7 will cost me 1500$ (EVERYTHING INCLUDED)... I wonder If I can get a summer job to pay that off in a month or so...

i7 for sure. It's amazing how fast it is considering I came from a Q9450 clocked at 3.8Ghz. The i7 just rips everything to shreds.
Seriously it's so worth the extra $200 you'll "save" on a PII. Trust me you'll be buying alot more performance.

Dude seriously though, if your going to splurge and get a $1400 setup weather its an i7 or PII I say save up the extra $200 and go for the gusto.

If gaming is your only activity I'd go the Phenom route whether X3 or X4. The difference between the i7 and 720 BE is very small in games, in a lot of games we've seen the 720 BE beat out the i7 whilst being a lot cheaper. I suppose if you get the i7 you’ll be able boast about having the fastest architecture all around on forums but at the cost of being financially crippled for a relative gain? It is actually a no-brainer, save over $200 for the similar performance or better in games. |

If you check different forums for mobo, cpu and Ram you should be able to put together a core i7 920 system for around $500.
This is if you already have a case, video card and psu. |

I have an i7 obviously and I never regretted the extra 300 bucks ever since (thats price of other parts too). The eight logical threads work very well despite that they are not real cores yet tri-channel is amazing. Phenom 2s and i5s are not worth competing against the i7 because of this, since they don't have the following: -tri-channel -QPI -x58 4x multi-gpu support The rest is not necessary for me... |

Gaming = X3 720. Don't worry about the future, there's going to always be something better.

What kind of price range are you looking at? If you are going to be mostly using this for gaming save the money and get the PII. I don't think HT is going to be used in gaming for quiet some time.

if you are so set on buying i7 go ahead, when people tell you to save your money and get a P2 its for your own good.
simple question why do you need i7? and what can it do that a P2 cant when gaming is what your system is used for? |

Why would the i7 last any longer for games? Games do not even require a high-end processor you could probably put in a E6600 and get similar frame rates. I'm very doubtful that this generation of games are going to harness multiple threads as standard, and I'm sure even when multiple threaded games are standard the Phenom II and i7 will be a distant memory. |

I am in the same boat as you are, trying to figure out what to buy. I will mostly use mine for gaming as well.
So in a few months of saving some money, I will get an i7 920, or a PIIx4 955 I think. Then have to choose a vid card... one expensive single card, or 2 cheaper in SLI... so many choices, so little money.... ![]() Good luck, |

Buying i7 soley for gaming is a bit silly imo. My dad has an i7 rig and two 4870X2's and the difference with one 4870X2 and my rig is almost negligible. The only game his does better in is Crysis, but we both still sustain 50+FPS. PII X2/X3/X4 @ 3ghz is all you need for gaming, anything higher is just for epeen and benching.

lol... I give good examples for i7 when you say PII, and I give good examples for PII if you say i7...
As I said, I am very undecided... i7 is top of the line, I will probably have a better time with it, have more fun OCing it, will help in anything else then gaming, will game very good, and looking at the architecture and all, it seems it will outlast a PII by a good margin For PII 955 vs i7, I'd go i7 for sure since you don't really save a lot of money going PII... Yes it will game the same, but won't future GPUs need more CPU power later on? on top of that, x58 has the choice of both xfire and sli... which is nice since I have absolutely no preference between Nvidia or ATI... "I'm sure even when multiple threaded games are standard the Phenom II and i7 will be a distant memory." but the PIIs are multiple threaded too! but this point is the main reason I'm hesitating... When I will need more CPU power, will i7 still be in mid-range or so? Also, i7 seems to handle multi-GPU setups well... wtf idk what to do lol
