I'd say the P4 and i7 tie. i7 runs WAY to hot. Core2's run relatively cool in my experience.

the i7 runs way hotter than P4 and Core2 but they're designed to take that much heat

google is your freind and that question is far to general. we'd need to know specific models. but heres the list of all the models for each platform with their tdp's.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors max's out at 115w on ee 775 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors max's out at 150w on ee yorkfied http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors all are 130w but as I said individual models will vary the question is far too general. |

I was wondering if these guys saying the i7 ran the hottest even had any idea what they were talking about. None of them has an i7 system. That said, I know for sure that i7 is a cool running chip that hits super high MHz on relatively little voltage. Don't speak out of your shadowy-areas, guys. The P4 is THE hottest chip. Core 2 (Duos) get pretty damn hot, but not as much as the P4.
And as mentioned above, not only are the newer, smaller construction dies (45nm vs 65nm) able to handle more heat, they also run cooler too. |

So, would a P4 cpu heat sink work on the i7?
Looking to upgrade my MOBO and planning to use the same cpu cooler if possible.

That wont cool an i7. Even at stock settings, the stock cooler can see upto 80+C, so that gimpy little thing will just melt.

Well the stock cooler is supposedly liquid cooled according to sony. It's a very quiet cooler and has a good size heatsink on the upper compartment with a huge fan blowing through it. My 3.4 P4 HT is hitting about 50-55c idle.

You have to build an entirely new system to use an i7.

i7 - P4 - core 2 quad - core 2 duo - in order of heat at stock clocks, stock cooling.
i7 -c2q - c2d - p4 in order of performance.

Ok thanks guys, Guess I'm going to the core 2 duo route. Cheaper and cooler. Good for what I need it for.

Phenom II's are better for the price. 130$ for the 720BE is a STEAL.

if all you're doing is gaming/regular PC usage, then core 2 duo is the best choice. only look at i7 if you're trying to feed monster video card setups (SLI/crossfire) or you do 3d rendering or video encoding.

My Core i7 920 with the stock HSF runs loaded between 80C and 85C. I would not recommend buying a Core i7 without buying at least a Scythe Mugen-2 (cheapest of the good HSFs at $40). That brought the loaded temp down to 55C.
P4s ran hot too. They are practically the same architecture so they are hot for the same reasons. Hyperthreading is what really takes the temps to the next level. Core 2 Duo/Quad run warm but quite a bit under P4/Core i7. The quads are quite about hotter than the duos though.
