There are the KLite codec packs as well.It is available in basic pack, standard and full pack if i remember well, meaning the full pack is the one with most codecs.
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...codec_pack.htm

Advice:Use Media Player Classic (which is included in these codec packs) or Media Player Home Cinema x64 if ur running 64bit OS....imo it's the best media player ever!

It's a limitation in WMP, not the codec pack, that's why I use VLC now instead of WMP. The latest build is much better than it used to be, and it can be set to use system codecs over it's own built-in ones.

I tried K-Lite, CCCP and VCP, all the same sort of thing.

VCP is the best, most updated pack out there IMO.

Well if ya have the subs in a different language, it uses directvob. While playing your file look down by the clock, you'll see a green arrow, right click on that, and you should be good to go.

I use the CCCP. Still the most compatible, with the least problems. Vista Codec Pack is a close second. I avoid K-Lite like the plague. They can't properly set up a codec pack to save their lives.

CCCP is the best.

K-lite is terrible, and while VCP may be up to date, its not bug free. give it another 6 months and i'm sure it will be one of the best out there, if not the best - but when i tried it, i got a hosed OS that wouldnt boot for my trouble (approx 6 months ago)

Theres only one real rule: always, always reboot the machine after uninstalling one codec pack, before installing the new one. The only times i've seen CCCP suck is when people uninstall K-lite and install CCCP without rebooting.

CCCP does subtitles fine, there is just a bug with haali media splitter and windows 7 (and possibly your server 2008)- add directvobsub as a preferred filter in "external filters" in MPC-HC's options.

I use this and have no issues so far. I haven't tried CCCP yet but I won't rule it out as a better app than what I am currently using.

oh and another thing:
http://www.cccp-project.net/beta/

CCCP's hidden beta page some of them may be very unreliable (so know what you're getting into, before you click) but they're a lot newer than the official.

In the latest beta "auto load VS filter" is a tickbox when you install it, thus fixing the no subtitles bug with MKV files in certain OS's

Autoload VSFilter is an option in the settings app of the stable releases as well.

No, it's actually quite terrible, especially if you like anime or do a lot of encoding.

the amount of machines i have to fix because explorer.exe keeps crashing with K-lite being the cause, is ridiculous. 9/10 times its K-lite, the last time its some douche installing antique versions of nero in vista.

latest CCCP beta has experimental hardware acceleration as well, it umm, just doesnt have a working GUI in that mode (as far as i can see, we'll see what happens after i reboot)

anyone who does try it, alt-X is the shortcut to quit the window when its in fullscreen mode.

I haven't had problems with K-Lite since the infamous Vista incompatibility problems. Since then it's been fixed and I haven't had those issues. I definitely did have those issues with it ~3 years ago though. I tried CCC and didn't find it to be too great, went back to K-Lite after all the problems were solved and ain't been nothin but smooth sailing.

You obviously don't do a lot of encoding that relies on DShow filters. K-Lite is the worst choice of all those mentioned so far.

yes, i go from 10% CPU usage to ~ 2%. its hard to tell since it only accels in full screen.
Since i have no working GUI in 3D mode (may show up after a reboot, as the volume % is missing also) i have no way to time skip or do anything but pause or exit.

Neither I nor the average user has any use for encoding.

if you look around, you'll find a lof of uneducated people use K-lite or reccomend it, but wherever you go for playback help you tend to find the same thing asked first: are you using K-lite?

If it was a trouble free pack, it wouldnt be the first question many people ask when troubleshooting.
