Well it is their highest end card and on par or better compared to a 295. However the ATI 5xxx series seem to be out soon, so its the question: You want to upgrade now and see the new generation swing by shortly, or wait and get on the five-train directly.

The 4870x2 and GTX295 go head-to-head....but, to the OP; the 4890 is a solid card and at the current prices, you cant go wrong.

Ive got a Sapphire 4890 that I got for that price -20 after rebate from ewiz a few weeks ago. I have to say I love the hell outta this card, and for the price its damn near unbeatable. DX11 isn't a factor for me just as DX10 isn't. I played Crysis in DX9 with a custom config that made it look as good as DX10 plus I got better frames. I started Bioshock in DX10 but there is no AA support for it so I switched to DX9 and I think is looks just as good, if not better with AA.
It all comes down to if you want to pay a huge premium for a super high end card or do like me, stick a generation behind and save money. Although I am leaving for boot camp in about 2 months so that may have affected my decision and I upgraded from a Geforce 6800 go from 05 so the performance of this card is tickling my pickle. I'd say do it, get it for 200, wait for prices to drop on the next gen cards and sell the 4890 and save some bucks. |

Hell, then do what I'm doing. Buy it right now and get some solid gaming out of it. I've saved so many games that I haven't touched because my 6800 go could barely handle them on low and now that i just built this rig I'm trying to get these games finished so i can either part it out, or let it sit... Just beat Crysis, Dead Space, and Assassin's Creed. Im working on Bioshock, Company of Heroes OF, GRAW, and Fallout3. This card owns em all, except Crysis of course, but I game at 1920x1080 and nothing lower.
Edit* also I play DS, Bioshock, and Fallout3 with Vsync on and they hold 60fps solid on max graphics at 1920x1080, however, DS has no option to force AA, Bioshock I play at 2xAA and FO3 on max graphics with 2xAA and 15 samples AF will dip to 50-55 in outdoors but i just lower the settings to High which I can't tell any difference, and it maintains 60fps at all times, of course you could turn vsync off and get much better frame rates, but i HATE screen tearing. AA doesn't bother me too much as I have a 21.5in monitor so my pixel pitch is very small and less AA is needed to smooth out my jaggies. Last edited by Spaceman Spiff; Jun 14, 2009 at 07:18 PM. |
