Stealth Computer Releases a Rugged Waterproof Fanless PC
Stealth Computer, a leading ISO 9001 manufacturer of industrial rugged computers and peripherals has released the new Model WPC-500F, a waterproof rugged, small footprint, fanless computer for environments where ordinary computer hardware won't survive.
The new Stealth WPC-500F is a rugged PC that is completely water-tight, surviving liquids, chemicals, dust and dirt intrusion, meeting IP67/NEMA 6 environmental specifications. Designed without cooling fans the internal CPU is cooled through advanced heat pipe technology. The rugged aluminum chassis also acts as a heat sink to dissipate internal heat and provide noise free operation. ![]() Stealth's WPC-500F extreme environment PC offers tremendous power in a tiny package that measures only; 7.51"(W) x 11.37"(D) x 2.97"(H) or (191 x 298 x 75.5 mm) yet surpasses the performance of most industrial and embedded PCs available today. Systems utilize Intel's latest Atom processor technology for maximum performance and power efficiency. "The WPC-500F provides the most environmental protection of any PC that we have offered to date. The machine is completely sealed on all six sides and can withstand the harshest of environments." stated Ed Boutilier President & CEO of Stealth.com Inc. The WPC-500F extreme environment PC features power, video, serial and USB connections that are coupled through water-tight, locking bayonet style connectors typical of military designed hardware. The WPC-500F is built utilizing special high performance hard drives that can withstand extreme temperatures, high vibration, high humidity, as well as high altitudes. For applications that require even higher shock and vibration resistance an optional SSD (Solid State Hard Drive) is available. The durable water tight PC operates from a wide range of DC input power (10-30VDC) making it an ideal fit for mobile/marine, field and transportation based applications. Systems are compatible with Microsoft Vista/XP, Linux etc and can be custom configured to meet the exact needs of the OEM or end user. A special mounting bracket comes standard with each unit allowing for the PC to be easily mounted in control panels, walls, consoles, etc Stealth products are ideal for demanding applications within the Industrial, Commercial, Scientific Research, Military, Marine, Public Safety, Utility, Transportation, Mining and Telecommunications markets. Stealth is now booking orders for the WPC-500F for delivery in early July, 2009. Basic configurations of the waterproof PC start at $1995.00 USD. For more information, visit this page. |

![]() I LOL at those connectors. Seriously, what situation can you imagine where the PC has to be in an environmentally harsh environment yet the VGA connector will plug openly into a regular monitor just 3ft away? Likewise serial, USB, ethernet. Now I could understand connectors that were environmentally sealed at BOTH ENDS. But one end? Then just move the computer closer to the "safe location" of the peripheral. Perhaps use an iMac even, with the PC in the screen. LOLARKS

Some food for thought: without an equally durable monitor, keyboard and mouse, how useful is this?

Looks like Stealth is just supplying cables for standard, off the shelf peripherals. I am sure that if you have specialized peripherals for harsh enviros, they would be happy to make cables for whatever you need.
That being said, the real question is will this thing deflect a 50 cal, depleted uranium shell? No? I want my money back!

Okay, I came up with a great use for this thing!
Let's say you are sitting in your favorite happy spot (that would be on the dumper in the bathroom) and you want to check out TPU. You mount a flat screen monitor on the wall in front of you and run all of the cable into the wall. Using a wireless kb & mouse you are need no cables. You can them mount this little gem in the tank of the toilet (it's waterproof!) and run the cables out the back completely hidden from use. Not only will it survive the in-crapper installation, but its volume will mean you are putting less water in the tank and thus saving the world by not overconsuming that precious commodity of H2O. Brilliant !!!

Clearly you've got the wrong idea of where to mount it in the bathroom... you put it in a tank that's hooked up to the warm water tap in your sink, this little baby would mean warm water all year round instead of just flushing that warm water down the crapper.

Actually I'm impressed; its noiseless, durable AND looks fairly good. And 2000$ Is not even that much. I'm sure chemical laboratories and such could use them well.

How can they justify a starting price of $2000!!?? The only unique part of this setup is the breakout cables they're using from the case. I could "borrow" some milc connectors from work here and build one of these myself using a car PC case and the same internals for nearly a quarter of the price. And from the looks of the cable grommets in the first picture with the water pouring on the case, the milc connectors would be better suited for keeping out water.

It's an industrial "Rugged Waterproof". It shouldnt need any support staff, or warranty, right?
![]() No the price is high due to the low volumes and expensive sales and marketing channels. They would be more successful if they had a more comprehensive set of industrial strength connectors (both ends) and apparatus as standard accessories. |

True... still, we've no piped hot water in this house (not needed it, electric shower and such), so at least it wouldn't be completely cold... I'm thinking a tank that would leave maybe 1 liter of water after the comp's in it, fully insulated and such. Could work, could be pointless, but at least you'd have a more efficient means of transferring heat away from it than leaving it sitting in the open air.

It will only warm the water in a tank and cause bacteria, tank fouling, and legionnaires.
PS. I like this much more: http://www.motioncomputing.co.uk/pro...blet_pc_c5.asp For the same price you get a whole system, incl, touch TFT screen, inbuit videao camera, barcode reader, and battery! |
