I think you could probably make a few small compromises(eg, 500GB 7200rpm HDD instead of a 640GB 5400rpm HDD) and get one of those for $1600-1800, which is pretty decent. Asus come out a winner on this one.

theres a massive difference between a mobility 2XX card and a desktop version

the 260m is slower than a 8800GT and the 280m is slower than a 8800GTS 512(maybe a tiny bit faster than a 8800GT though)

G51 is sold at BBY its $999 (P7350/4GB/320GB) and the G71 is $1149 (P8600/IDR/IDR)

Oh, I'm sure it can.

But just call it a 9800GT. (Or perhaps, an 8800GT...) That's all anyone's asking. The 9800GT is a good chip, but it looks crappy when it's rebranded as something that it's not.

You mean 8800 GT. 9800GT is a rebrand in itself.

It is 9800M xx, GTX 260M, or whatever makes NVIDIA feel better, and unsuspecting customers feel stupid. It's the NVIDIA way.

It's odd -- both companies are weird about this. Especially with ATI rebranding 4870 boards as lower model numbers (the whole 4730 thing). Apparently they've got money to burn. :P

There's a difference. ATI is not rebranding a HD 4670 to say "Mobility HD 4850".

HD 4730 is (640 SP, 128-bit GDDR5, RV770), HD 4870 is (800 SP, 256-bit GDDR5, RV770). Not the same.

i agree with what's been said. When i first heard of the GTX 260/80m i was like dam these laptops are gonna be as powerful as one of teh best desktops. but then i saw the GTX 260m was just an overclocked 9800GTX+m. kinda gay wonder how long it'll take GT200 to be used in laptops, probly 2years lol
