AMD RS880 IGP 15 Percent Faster

AMD's upcoming chipset with integrated graphics, codenamed RS880 is said to feature a significantly faster integrated graphics processor (IGP), which is about 15 percent faster than the current RS780. While technically it is derived from the AMD RV610 core with some tweaked clock-speeds, it will get the brand name ATI Radeon HD 4200. With 1800 points in 3DMark06, this IGP is as powerful as GeForce 6800 GT a high-end graphics accelerator from the DirectX 9 generation. In today's setting the score isn't exactly spectacular, but makes it highly competitive with IGPs from rival NVIDIA. The chipset will make a formal debut this August.

Wow, comparable to a 6800GT huh. Can it at least play HD content at 30 fps?

Desktop IGP chips are getting much better all the time, sad the mobile lag sucks so much.

If only they could give it it's own memory instead of syphoning from the system ram... even something as simple as 128mb 128-bit would be fine (not asking much, my FX 5200 Ultra had that)

It supports SPMI (Sideport Memory Interface). Motherboard makers can give it 128/256 MB DDR3 memory of its own. SPMI doesn't eradicate the need for UMA, but you can greatly minimize the shared memory amount and retain nearly the same level of performance.

Is that through the CPU processing or with a sucky IGP? Or shared?

All dx10 GPUs from ATI (including their IGPs) have been able to fully decode most HD codecs internally on specially designed silicon for decoding, i'm not 100% on which nvidia ones came out with nvidia's comparable silicon but all new nvidia gpus have them too.

I am very interested. I love onboard video, really useful when you don't have a real video card My 790GX HD 3300 has saved me a few times.

haha not quite but definitely playable. my 7800GTX lags in CSS at 1680x1050 if i turn the settings all the way up had to stick to medium at first, but luckily i found i, for some odd reason, am better at the game when i play at 1280x1024 .

This is fine and good, but it's to be expected. If it wasn't this much faster the 9300m based IGPs would eat AMD up....

What we really need is for the intel IGPs to see like a 50% performance increase and reduce the number of old IGP chipsets intel is shipping. AMD is leading by example perhaps, but intel controls a lot of the market and really decides where the IGP performance sits. Perhaps the i5s will offer a decent igp.

Rv610?

RV610? That cant be right? The entire Radeon HD 3000 series IGPs were RV610. I thought the Radeon HD 4200 would have a RV620 GPU? Also any word on Hybrid Crossfire?

Does a 7600GT/X1600XT compare to this then? I can't remember if the 7600/x1600's were any good against the 6800/x850's.

onboard video has next to nothing to do with HD content. if it has a plug for a monitor, it can do HD.

If you mean assisting blu ray decoding properly, then yes. all the onboards recently can do that fine (ATI seem to be better than nv and intel with this)

if you mean HD content, as in MKV files and such - no, you're screwed. there are no codecs out there that can do this yet.
