RAM timings

Hey TPU

needing help again

Recently i have gained the courage to start fooling around with my RAM timings but im a little lost. I currently have 4 gig of Corsair DDR2 800 Mhz RAM with timings of 5-5-5-18 and i was told i should try and run them at 4-4-4-12 at around 2 volts. I tried this and prime95 crashed in 0.4 seconds.

So to all you pros, what can i do to speed up my RAM?

You could try 2.1 volts or possibly more but you don't want to kill your RAM. It seems as if your RAM is incapable of running those timings and it doesn't seem very overclockable.

il try 2.1 volts right now and il tell you

Try 2.1, I've seen 2.4, even up to 2.7 on some ram but why not loosen the timings one by one. Perhaps try 4-5-5-18 then 4-4-5-18 then 4-4-4-18 at 2.1V until you can stabilize it.

im running prime95 4-4-4-12 right now at 2.1 v and it hasnt crashed yet
beat my old score of 0.4 seconds :]

how much of a performance increase should i see if i get these times stable?

ok, it got 8 mins without an error, bumping up the voltage helped. should i bump it up some more?

Let it run. Run through memtest a couple times. Your ram is very limited in what it can do, 4 4-4-12 timings should make things a bit "snappier" especially with an AMD system. Also, post up some CPU-Z screenshots please.

Interesting. Try running 4 4-4-13 at 2.1v and use memtest again. Perhaps a tRAS of 12 isn't possible with those sticks but a tRAS of 13 is.

Dude, triple posting is kinda frowned upon.

Download and burn Memtest to a disc and give it a run to see if your timings are stable. 4 minutes of Prime usually dont suffice.

Try bumping your cpu voltage up a notch and see where that gets you. Keep the ram @ 4-4-4-12 2.1v.

ok, ran the RAM at 4-4-4-12 at 2.2 volts and prime 95 lasted longer. should i bump up the RAM voltage again aswell as my CPU ?

You are entering RAM killing territory when you go above 2.2v.

i know :/ just wondering what else i can do to stabalize these timings. Should increase my NB and CPU voltage then?

Those are CAS5 sticks i doubt you will have any luck keeping them at 4-4-4-12 stable. Raising the volts to 2.2 you are asking to buy more ram 2.1 they should be able to handle. I would say loosen the timings a bit as mlee49 stated. A few people I know have them sticks and they are hard to tighten the timings from what I was told.

I found this may have some info to help you out. I couldnt really find any thing on those chips.

thanks mate

they fail prime95 after 10 mins

but i was playing GTA4 for 4 hours last night with no problems at all. i also compressed my whole music folder ( which is 8 gig) just to se eif they were stable, and i have no problems. Only with prime95 :S

I run mine at 5-5-5-12 at stock voltage. I have PC 8500 but you might be able to give it a try.
