John Carmack: "I hope that Nvidia didn’t pay a whole lot of money for PhysX"

At the Recent Keynote event at QuakeCon 2009 John Carmack answered a question on hardware PhysX . It turn’s out John is not a big fan of PhysX. He believes that Ageia along with PhysX was just made to be a start-up in hopes to get acquired. Eventually Nvidia did just that and John “hopes that Nvidia didn’t pay a whole lot of money for it”.

With Nvidia announcing that ATI graphic users will not be able to use an Nvidia card as physx with the newer drivers and now this statement coming from Carmack...just doesn't look good for Physx from this side of the line.
I know I was pretty pissed about Batman using Physx because my opinion on this is I'm not spending $50 bucks for game that basically is going to look like a Xbox360/PS3 game on my system but Nvidia users get that "whole" experience just because they have an Nvidia 8xxx-above series card. So I'm not going to be getting this game now.

And as consumers we need to skirt around games like that. I *MUST* buy X brand of card to get he full experience even though i paid in full for my game, garbage!

yeah haha... totally agree with that- not only is dx11 around the corner but also 4, 8, and 12+ core CPU's.

And I seriously do not understand why nv cards don't work as ppu cards alongside ATI, that is not something thats good for business on the nv side.

Yeah that is kind of crappy. Personally, not sure physics adds much to a game, but if I have to get Nvidia to have it, bump that.

Ditto.

I said some time ago that it was doomed to fail if NVIDIA didn't license the hardware for it (or ability to run it on 3rd party manufacturer's hardware). Instead, they restricted it to NVIDIA only. That dotted the i's and slashed the t's for its death.

Nvidia put it on life support after buying ageia, but its time was still coming, and I think that after 1 good game comes out using DX11's enhanced physics, other developers will take note and physX will be finally dead, and once PhysX is completely dead, nvidia will take its defibrillator off and let PhysX drift away into the sea of fail, and there will be smiles as far as ATI can see.(makes me wanna cry)

I think the point is having a universal way of doing physics. I could care less about what company using a proprietary physics solution while others are left out. Why would a developer even want to bother using a physics program that doesn't cater to all of their customers? There are plenty of games that have good physics already without the use of PhysX. Overall PhysX was and is a failure just like DX10 and it's obvious by the lack of support from game developers. Something new is needed so good riddance to PhysX, and hello to DX11.

I still wonder what Intel is planning to do with Havok/why Intel bought out Havok. I expected something from it by now.

ID Tech 4 uses Havok? No surprise Carmack is slamming PhysX then.

I do gotta agree with ya there. Sure PhysX has some promise, but the limitations are rediculous. Maybe NV is toying with us at this moment and waiting to kill off PhysX in leu of DX11 support...I hope 11 picks up faster than 10, and with the "promises" thus far it seem son track to do that...I'll believe it when I see it. But frankly, I do prefer a game to have integrated physics than using nv physx, though I gotta say Trine was badass, where-as Cryostasis was flat out dissapointing. I think the track record for physx support itself aside from sidenotes in my driver updates points out that physx probably will always be that, a small blip on the radar trying to be overemphasized as a selling point. Sure it could be, but tbh right now it's really not. Doesn't make me regret any of my NV purchases during their PhysX support run, as that was generally a low-priority deal anyways.

And if the man himself (Carmack) says it's a waste, I definately have no reason to argue with him! Can't wait for RAGE!
