Stock CPU Heatsink Fan Not Cooling Properly
I purchased my Q9650 CPU earlier this month and I had it cooled with my CoolIT Freezone Elite MTEC Liquid CPU Cooler. But I immediately noticed that the temperature of my CPU at idle was kind of high. I had a Q6600 CPU overclocked at 3.40GHz before and it too was cooled by my CoolIT Freezone Elite MTEC Liquid CPU Cooler. But the idle temperature before with the Q6600 was around 23 degrees celcius and around 55 degrees celcius at full load with my 3.40GHz overclock. Now with my new Q9650 CPU and my Freezone Elite, temperature at idle would be around 40 degrees celcius and over 80 degrees celcius at full load with the Q9650 overclocked to 4.0GHz. So I contacted CoolIT Systems, and now they're going to RMA my unit. So for the mean time, I installed the stock Q9650 Heatsink Fan and downclocked my Q9650 to stock at 3.0GHz. But the temperature at idle would be around 55 degrees celcius and over 90 degrees celcius at full load. I thought that the Q9650 doesn't get as hot as a stock Q6600 because it's a 45nm CPU compared to my Q6600. Are these normal temperatures for a stock Q9650 CPU with the stock heatsink fan installed or is the problem with my CoolIT Freezone Elite MTEC Liquid CPU Cooler?

at stock with a stock cooler I wouldn't imagine those temps are right.
Reseat the stock cooler, even though it IS a real POS cooler, I cant see why you should even be in the 70's at full load. As for the coolit system, I personally dont think its all that great for either quad. Assuming you cleaned the radiator prior to asking for an RMA?

Innitially, I wasn't satisfied with the Freezone Elite. But then I replaced the stock fan on it with a Delta 120×120×38mm 4000RPM @ 148.34CFM Rev. C Very High Speed Fan and it was cooling like a champ! Only thing is that now my system is loud with that fan at 51.0dBA. But that doesn't really bother me because I game with my Logitech G35 7.1 Surround Sound Headset. Also, I made sure that the stock heatsink fan was seated properly. I'm going to RMA my CPU as well then, because now I think that it's the problem and not my Freezone Elite.

There is a slight chance you just got a really hot chip.

My QX6700 at stock with the stock cooler idles at about 53c-55c(or at least the first core does).
At load it can hit the high 60c's i believe, no biggie IMO.

It probably is just bad luck and you have a hot chip. Check how flat the chip is with a razor blade? |

I guess I should ask....what is the CPU voltage for the Q9650 at load?
possibly upload a (CPU fully loaded)CPU-z screenshot here, and copy the link and post it here?

What are you using to read the temps and is the tjmax set correctly?

the heat shutdown is due to a bios setting, the chip will run at around 95-100*C it will just throttle back to a 6X multi if its stable and just hot.
I would get with intel, and let them know the CPU wont pass stability testing at stock settings, and that the temps are outrageous. You will have to ship it in though, so you will need a backup CPU if the PC has to stay running. My last RMA took just over a week from the time I shipped to when I got my CPU on the porch, 10 days max.

A lot of the times if you ask Newegg will give you a next day saver shipping to and from them.

Well, I just received my brand new RMA replacement Q9650 from Newegg and the temps are normal now. With my CoolIT Systems Freezone Elite, it's cooling my CPU at 15 degrees celcius at idle and at 35 degrees at full load. Right now the CPU is not being overclocked though. I'm going to work on that tomorrow!
