Sony's next Flash Walkman to be released next week.

The currently unnanounced NWS700 series of Sony Walkman's are supposedly scheduled to ship October 9th, and are feature-laden. The device comes in three colors, black, pink, and purple. They are very small, will ship with between 1 and 4 gigabytes of flash storage, have a three line color screen, and noise cancelling headphones. The NWS700 series will ship for £100 for 1GB, £130 for 2GB, and £180 for 4GB.

Looks nice. But only interested if it follow the "old Walkman spirit" = non-proprietary formats.

Can you imagine if the ORIGINAL walkman had proprietary cassettes that had a different size and could not play stuff you recorded from your hi-fi.

I hope we will see MP3, flac and other formats on the NWS700 series. But something tells me I will be left hoping...

Actually the mp3 from sony plays MP3, WMA, ATRAC (and ATRAC Lossless), wav and AAC. I have a NW-A3000 and i think it beats most mp3 players (like Ipod, Zen, and brands like that) talking about sound quality.

I'd like proof of this...

However, even if it would, you would have to use headphones better than what come with them... the apple headphones are some of the nicest I've found that come with mp3 players..

I work in an Electronics Store and I tested many mp3 player (all the ipods, many creatives, sony's, scan disk and many others) and the better sound quality belongs to Creative.

Creative and Iriver generally have the highest quality sound output.

Although before I got a Zen Micro, I had a slim sony mp3 cd player that was easily the best sounding cd player I have ever had. Too bad it stopped working after a 1 foot drop.

Before the mp3 players era I had 3 Sony Walkman Cd players and the sound quality was superb. All of them stop working before 1 year.

i have their current sony flash mp3 player, off the top of my head i think its the 509 and the sound quality is damn good. the software is absolutely attrocious, i mean its unusable. also i had my comp died and i got a new one and since it has music from the old player it refuses to take out the songs or delete them. to say the least they have tons of problems. the good news is that theres an open file program that is available in asia that you can dl from the sony asia website that lets you bypass sonys crap. if anybody needs it ill try to find it again, i have it installed on my player (instead of the comp) and it works ok, accepting all files.

the worst part about this is that they wont trust us with it but in asia where i imagine bootleggin is so much worse they do. now, thats retarded.

the battery life, the only reason i was sold on it besides asthetics is a supposed 50 hours, i havent counted but i have used it for a good 40+ hours and not had to recharge it. i now recharge it about once a week or week and a half. the 3 minute super charge that is supposed to last 3 hours really does last almost that long. i was caught once with it on the low and in a bit of a hurry but it lasted on my train trip down and back up to manhattan (from the bronx.)

I expect that you don't used the original headphones, they sound really bad...

I have the sennheiser CX300 and i tried with Ipod, Iriver, Zen, samsung mp3 (i don't remember the name) and sandisk mp3. I can say that the sony sound is far better (i'm talking about NW-A3000, not the flash memory players)

Sound quality is verymuch so a matter of opinion.

It would be fun to see some double blind tests with mp3 players though!

(same with A64's and intel CPU's!)

The only way that you'd be able to actually hear a better sound, is if one MP3 player output at a higher wattage than another, and you're looking for higher volume clarity. If you used the same MP3 file, the same headphones, the same EQ, and the same volume levels, I guarantee 100% there's no difference.

Iriver has more bass and better sound quality than Sony mp3 players, Sonys sound sucks on mp3 players for any bass/3d sound at least, I tested this with sony headphones the best quality clip on ones, they rule for thier size (Sony MDR-Q55SLblue).

I like this part of sony small headphones "alarge turbo duct offers a more powerful, deep bass", I bought a second sony headphones with this turbo duct and it works good, the water resistant behind the head headband ones.

MP3 doesn't suck. MP3 can be mathematically identical to a WAV file and sound just like it, but because of superior compression, it's only a fraction of the KB.

Because of compressions, it will remain inferioir to all high quality formats No Mp3 player can get around that

True. However, can you honestly hear a difference between an MP3@ 320kb/s (using a modern encoder), and a CD? I can't, and I'm very picky about high frequencies in MP3s.

also, who elected Solaris17 for commander of Techpowerup forum patrol? Dippyskoodlez and I are having a fun discussion.
