Hi guys.. This is what happened when I changed the SATA cord. Also tried to boot from disk.. Didn't work so unplugged CD drive just to see what came up on the screen and it was this.. ?

I hope someone can help me out here.

Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz

<CPUID :0F43 Patch ID :0004>
Memory Testing : 524288K OK

Primary Master: None
Primary Slave: None
Secondary Master : None
Secondary Slave : None

CMOS checksum error - Defaults Loaded.

<F1> : to continue <DEL> : BIOS setup
05/12/2005-RS400/M1573D-6A7K5G0AC-00

(Tried Alt + F10 whilst cd cord was plugged in.. nothing happened.. just got the screen I have written above)

(This is what I can see on the mobo)
8TRS400M
sticker under this says:
5A4228 01252

On another place on the mobo it says:
SATA PCI Express Dual Channel DDR2

Does this help?

Am not sure what to try next?

AsRock... That is hillarious! I don't know if I am going to tell him or not.. He is still a little from the computer not succumbing to his demands (For want of a better word lol)

As for the no suger Tigger.. we are talking about a guy that has Jam (jelly in the States) on his cereal ?!?!

A denial of sugar and I may end up having to tether him.. out side..... far faarrr awayyyy..

with a muzzel lol

Then I could put his unfixed computer just within his reach.... video the aftermath and you could do a sticky on alternative methods to taking out a CD tray.. 'That are not effective'

He's Swedish so It could be very funny.. him and his quiet voice and his 99.9% of the time humble and rational attitude.. and then he spots the unfixed computer and FLIPS!

lol... maybe not.. anyway.. back to the drawing board..

Think he has learnt that this is the long way around and that he really does love his pooter.. and he wants it back..

Does the computer make any strange beeps when you turn it on?

Open up the side of the pc and check that all cables are fully plugged in and nothing is loose.

If he has cards in the mobo (I dunno, graphics card, network card, sound card and the like) pull them out and push them the whole way in without using excessive force. Do same thing with the RAM.

My daughter's pc is on the floor and occasionally she hits it with her leg by accident. After this happens, it's exactly the same as what happened to your hubby's pc when he hit it. In her case though it's always the graphics card which gets 'jolted' - I remove it and insert it firmly and then the computer works as if nothing ever happened!

The "Green" just means that it saves on power. Haven't seen an 808.8GB drive before...weird.
Nonetheless, it is an ok drive.
And I agree with Panther, just run some other tests like that before ordering to make sure it isn't working first.

Is that what a 1TB shows up as after formatting? Just a thought.

That's what I thought originally, but I didn't think it would've lost 200GB due to formatting.

Hi Black Panther, just wanted to let you know that I tried everything you said but sadly had no luck. The computer just does 'one' beep when it starts. Then displays as stated in prior posts

Thanks for the troubleshooting info though. Will remember that for the next computer.. and the next one.. and the next one.. lol

Wouldn't be anything like the battery is flat in mobo would it? (I know this computer was beaten within a inch of it's life and I am probably grasping at straws here but .. I don't know.. maybe it is worth the ask?)

Think I am nearing the end

Computer has new hard drive. Have got things up and running..
DVD/CD writer didn't function, so took it out and opened it up and everything seemed to be ok.. so put in xp disc and reformatted.. It all worked (I think it was because I had my fingers crossed because the noise was very scarey). So I put in a Pioneer DVD/CD writer ummm LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling.. but it wouldn't work, not even read a disc. XP was up and running though (thank goodness)
So I am taking the pioneer DVD/CD writer back. It may be faulty.. No.. hubby didn't hit it for not working..

I have been told that it will be sent away and fixed but if they don't/cant or it gets lost.. so.. to be prepared, just in case... for this machine (hubbys) that this thread is all about, keeping in mind my husband likes to burn .. a lot.. what would you recommend as a suitable DVD/CD writer?

Would like to get things right and get this computer finished.. (a friend has given me an IBM to fix.. )

Would really like to not have to fix another computer this year, but I still have the no-read HDD to attend to for daughter and son..

Thank you for your support with this.. I know it is getting kind of boring.

""Not using CD/DVD that loaded XP as I could only get it to load with the casing unscrewed and loose.. seemed to be too tight and the plastic edges when pulled in was stopping the drive from opening.. As for the noise.. Was very surprised that it actually worked but don't want to push my luck"""

But this fact states different. No idea where the extra 100GB is at...Maybe they miscalculated something?
none of the space is "missing", its from the way Windows and the hard drive manufacturer counts hard disk space. for example, one kilobyte is 1000 bytes according to most hard drive manufacturers, whereas windows sees 1 kilobyte as 1024bytes.

to figure where the space has "gone" we do this...
we take the amout of bytes that the manufacturer has on the drive, in this case 1TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. divide by 1024 and we get 976,562,500 kilobytes, divide by another 1024 and we get 953,674.32 megabytes, divide by 1024 and you get 931.32 gigabytes.

Now as for the other drive only having 800gb, according to Western Digital's site, it is in fact an 808.8GB hard drive not 1TB 808.8GB drive. When its formatted in windows you will probably see 753GB. They probably did this to say they have a real 750GB hard drive for windows or some odd marketing scheme like that.

Yes I am well aware of how hard drives operate and get partitioned and all that jazz.
But thanks for looking the drive up and letting us know that is specifically 808.8GB.

Hi,

Hubby just put his CD/DVD burner in. He plugged in cables etc.. (I didn't know he was doing it and he thought it looked simple so he just did it.. He likes to tinker but has no idea what he is doing)(not saying I do). He said he only plugged in the power cord and the sata cord and then switched it on..After I went to help him upon request, and saw the CD/DVD already put in.. and said.. "What have you dun " He said, "It's beeping". so I plugged in the appropriate cables etc. (as he had disconnected in terror lol) and turned the computer on..

really fast beeps over and over and over and over and over... non stop (redundant I know sorry)

b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b b short.. high pitched.. continuous rhythm/beat..

Please tell me it's no biggy and I can fix it quickly.. if anything else goes wrong I am going to go out to the road and melt in with the bitumen on yet another 39 degree celsius day..
