Gigabyte Relabels Top X58 Motherboard
First surfaced two weeks ago, Gigabyte's then called GA-EX58-Extreme 2 motherboard has been renamed to GA-X58A-UD7, ahead of its launch. Traditionally known for giving the DQ6 and UD6 identifiers for its high-end motherboards, Gigabyte used the 'Extreme' identifier for some of its later high-end offerings. This is the first time a '7' identifier is in place. Touted to be a full-fledged successor to the EX58-Extreme, the X58A-UD7 brings to the table an upgraded feature-set, including support for USB 3.0, SATA 6 Gb/s, and four PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots (electrical x16, NC, x16, NC; x16, NC, x8, x8; or x8, x8, x8, x8, depending on how they're populated,) enabling 4-way ATI CrossFireX. Support for NVIDIA 3-way SLI is also included. One of the star attractions of this model is its factory-fitted chipset water-cooling block. Based on the Intel X58 Express chipset, the X58A-UD7 supports socket LGA-1366 Intel Core i7 processors. Its price and release date are still under wraps.

HA! I knew that GIGABYTE was going to name the next X58 series X58A, which is why I was baffled by the EXTREME2 name.

Yeah I'm absolutely baffled as to why they even bothered placing three PCI-E slots in a row. I can't think of a single combination that takes advantage of the setup unless you employ at least two single slot cards.
![]() Is that Northbridge/Southbridge heat sink really worth the sacrifice? ![]() Other than that the board looks great. |

Since most X58 NB setups are fanless, a cheap cheap all in one water cooling kit should do wonders for that NB.

" four PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots"
Well, this is disappoints me. I hate all marketing crap... 4×PCIe 16.... X58 Has 40 PCIe lanes, not 64...

Physically they indeed are four x16 slots. I explained the lane arrangements in the brackets.

Ahh, ok. Indeed the layout is retarded (of HD 5000's rear-panel, that is).

Actually, Trubritar has a couple of benchmarks on 4x5870. Go check him out on Youtube. He uses the Asus P6T7 mobo though.
Why watercooling? The 5870 Vapor-X will never pass 70 degrees Celsius even under load and isn't that loud. And it doesn't cost a fortune and isn't a pain in the ass to set up and maintain, like a water cooling loop. And you get to keep your warranty .Yeah, the 3 PCIe x16 slots in a row is quite dumb. So is the rear I/O design on the 5870. But it wouldn't be possible otherwise to use the Eyefinity technology. But who can afford 3 Eyefinity monitors anyways? And even so, your frame rates will suck. |
