Y'know - one thing I've gotta say that I've always been impressed with here (and the new GNU) . . . spam and bot accounts are eradicated quickly.

I can count on one hand the number of true "spam" posts I've seen here on TPU - the mods/admins do an excellent job of keeping that trash in the gutter where it belongs.

If there was an award for "cleanliest message board," TPU would sure get my nomination in a heartbeat.

I agree, the admins/mods do an excellent job of taking out the trash.
What also helps is timely reporting of posts by the members, which I've been told is excellent on TPU.
Keep up the good work everyone.

"Just say no" to spam. lol

In the brief time that I have resided here at TechPowerUp, I have felt that everything has been running great. The mods are pretty cool, they can be part of the thread and you don't have to "fear" them, but at the same time they make sure that things don't become out of hand. I haven't experienced the wrath of spammers or bots so I can't comment on that. The forum members are nice and informative for the most part, and some even have a nice sense of humor. Overall, this community is pretty awesome and if I didn't enjoy it here, I wouldn't have signed up for my free user account or participated in the forums.

I'm not trying to force the issue, but I got a PM today after saying to someone that they needed to display the asking price of an item in their FS thread. When I joined I was given an immediate warning to post the asking price of my sale items, or the thread would be removed. Have things changed? What are everyone's views on the subject? I personally do not believe items should be posted without an asking price.

its always been upto discretion you either get locked or you get warned as for the past few months it seems that you get w/e that mod feels is a good amount of time to put your price up if you havent. and imo their doing a good job and keeping it fair.

lol wut? Slow down there buddy, I cannot comprehend what you are writing. Bad spelling is fine and bad grammar is fine, but when you put the two together it's hard to understand.

Only post in a FS/FT thread if you are...
1) Bumping the thread. (Once every 24 hours for sellers)
2) Interested in the item and asking a question.
3) Negotiating the price of an item you want to buy. (But this should be done through private messages.)

Don't do these things in FS/FT threads:
1) Argue over whether prices are fair, or...
2) ...say that something else is cheaper elsewhere.
3) Argue with other members.

These guidelines will be strictly enforced, with infractions resulting for repeat violations.
Follow those ^^ There are no problems. Prices aren't required but it will indeed help sell your items. Many people don't want to haggle or offer a price.

dont forget that sometimes no mods are around when threads are made, so it can take a couple of hours before it gets dealt with.

i'll see them and report them for example, but since i'm not a mod of B/S/T we have to wait for E to get his ass out of bed :P

One of the problems with the forums, is that a certain Aussie mod is always making excuses.
I'm not around, or it's not my sections to moderate.
Where is the old fashion work ethic where everything is taken as a personal challenge?
Where is ... uh ... Hahahaa... crap. Sorry can't keep a straight face on this one.

You're doing a great job Mussels, even without the rainbows.

Okay, you may all think I am out of my mind, but I am a little concerned about the lack of drama that is occuring on the board recently.

I know that overly dramatic posts are dealt with quickly and concisely, but it seems to me that some threads are being crushed before they are given a chance.

One of the things that make a public forum appealing to the users is the fact that they can hash out their differences in a civil manner and only get clobbered when that civility disappears.

Why are threads being closed because the opinion in the thread differs from another thread that already exists, and someone wants to start another based on a differing opinion? In my opinion, that is the whole purpose of a forum. Just because a thread already exists on a topic does not mean that another thread on that topic does not serve a purpose.

That kind of heavy handed oversite is going to produce a forum that seems like all of the users are on Prozac. I understand that we do not need 50 threads on the same topic, but I think that each thread, as long as it is not completely redundant, deserves a chance to engage users in an appropriate manner to discuss the intent of the original post.

As always, just my opinion on what I see going on TPU.

In regards to the thread I locked that you are speaking about, it's really not needed. It would of turned out to be the exact kind of thread that was already started in the first place. The CoD MW2 thread has been somewhat troublesome and has required moderation several times. Another thread on the same topic would just cause more problems.

I would like to see a two sub-sections in the gaming area. One dedicated to Consoles and one to PC games. That might help with some of the drama.

+1, I've wanted that for a while, but I don't think it'll stop much if any drama in that area. There will always be those that wanna poke, pry and instigate no matter, and hell even someone's opinion is likely to offend someone else out there, but really even at it's worst, TPU's drama could be much worse imo.

I'd still like to see an expanded gaming section on TPU, starting with just Console and PC, maybe going from there. I realise this is a PC Tech forum first and foremost, but this place has grown so much since I joined in '06, to me expanding the gaming section by one topic just makes sense. The idea has been shot down every time, but I forsee it happening someday in the future.

Erocker, my friend, you know that I am not one to cowtow to the flagilating demands and preferences of the user base of a forum. All must be kept in check, in order to maintain a structure that does not alienate nor ostracise any user for thier personal opinion.

However, it has always been (at least in the past) a TPU trait that as long as you had something to say that was not redundant to another thread, and not outside the bounds of what was acceptable, that you had a forum in which to speak. If threads are closed because previous threads were problematic, then a whole arena of discussion is censored.

I am not sure if this is the way to go. This forum thrives on dissenting opinion. The concept of a thread being "needed", is of course up to the discrection of the moderators and I will not make specific reference to any moderators actions, but I will state my concerns in this section as that is why W1zz placed it here.

Don't get me wrong, you are all doing a great job of policing the forums and this post is not singling you out, Erocker. I've noticed in the last couple of months a worrisome trend in several instances.
I do not have the access to the "lounge" to take this up there, so I can only use this section to take a step back and review and discuss what is happening.

Honestly I haven't noticed anything odd. They had a game discussion thread and someone wanted to make a thread dedicated to discussing the same damn game? Of course it should have been closed. It only makes sense.

Looking at the threads that were closed they very clearly, and without any ambiguity, cover the same subject material as the thread posters were redirected to. Despite the alternate phrasings of their titles their purpose was to give a reader's opinion of Call of Duty. It is truly in your best interest to have reader's opinions on a game consolidated into one thread. It creates a one-stop shop where you can see how all your fellow members feel about the game, rather than forcing you to keep track of several threads. It has always been the case that threads covering near identical topics will be merged or closed and have members redirected to an alternative thread. A single thread makes reading easier for you and searching easier for people using search engine to find information. It is incidental that having one thread for COD opinions makes moderation easier. That was not the primary purpose behind the closure of the other threads for discussion of the game.

It... was... FOR THE GREATER GOOD

Hash out your COD differences all you want in the COD discussion thread. Just don't resort to name calling and flaming to get your point across and everything will be fine. I can guarantee that when it comes to moderation none of the staff care one bit whether you love COD or hate it. The only ideas being suppressed are whether one member thinks another is "a whiny bitch" or not. [JEDI MIND TRICK]That's not the drama you're looking for[/JEDI MIND TRICK]

I vote for Jedi mind trick code myself Now how to persuade them w/o a hand coming out of the screen to wave fingers in front of them.

A Positive Note

I come to sing the praises of TPU, not to bury it.

I want to say that this is the best forum I've ever been on. I've seen an absolute minimum of flaming, name calling, etc. I found everyone to bend over backward to help others. I've been in this field, as a career, since 1982, and I still learn things on TPU. It's the first place I go in the morning, and the last thing I check at night. This is a great community. To borrow an appropriate cliché, "May it live long and prosper".
