Thanks for the compliments, I'm glad that users have donated to this...the original was much, much smaller. It still gets the point across that it really helps to research and be prepared when overclocking to be successful.

Granted things have changed in the last year, as I've been meaning to update and modify this guide I just can't find myself wanting to do so. I hope it is still helpful, and if anyone wants to donate something or help modify something, let me know!

Ive Been overclocking for a while now and if u know your parts you know what they can do, and if u know what they can do u know how far to push them. u have to understand bios's and voltages and even materials used to synthesize the parts for chips and heat conducton systems you have to know techniques for making components flatter for better heat conduction alot of stuff they dont teach you in classes can also help

but i think that article (can i call it that) lolz makes a few good points and id like to commend the writer however dont try so hard to dicourage people from doing it.... lolz its fun it is a trial and error process that u have to learn to get right.... i havent ever burt anything out because i always do enough research on the products

but always be aware that overclocking can cause damage if done to the extreme and some parts are not protected by a warrenty if overclocked.... but i say give it a go just know your limits...

It's not that I try to discourage, but more discourage if not ready to overclock. :P Thanks for the compliments, it's much appreciated!

I've been overclocking for years and to be honest, when I first started I figured out the settings to play with, read a little and tried it...I became really good at clearing the CMOS! I never did fry the older equipment due to overclocking, but thankfully I learned to watch the temps early on and back off the OC on some of my first work.

Overclocking can be considered fun, but it can also be considered tedious, tiresome and boring...and of course I am pushing the more boring stuff when overclocking which would be running stress tests to ensure stability, of course for me some of the stress test is what I do every day with my rig (time allowing) which is gaming!

I do agree Overclocking is a learning process...everything overclocks differently and can take different steps, methods, settings, etc from one to another, eventually people that overclock different rigs can get an idea of where to start, get that good to go and move on if necessary. I've built and OC'd so many rigs, but I still research first if I'm unfamiliar with a component that will be overclocked, never hurts to be very well prepared! Thanks again and BTW, welcome to TPU!

I'm ready to go further over-clocking my PC to 3.4ghz and Ram pass 800mhz. I just have to up the voltage and cooling.

My question is how long can a PC be OC-not an exact estimate but a guess- will a OC PC last?
In the bios it shows Mv instead of watts-of course-; has anyone ever increased the mv, and will it change the volts?

Increasing MV is the same as increasing voltage for the parameter of the component it controls. That is how you increase voltage for a stable overclock on said component.

As-far-as how long a PC can be overclocked, really until something fails, end-of-life, overheat, etc...there is no time limit. I have had OC'd components last years, it just depends on how far you go, how much you're pushing your components, and how cool you keep them. If you go too far, run too hot and don't keep it stable, don't expect it to last forever...but nothing is guarenteed to last forever, even at stock ratings. Some components can fail at stock speeds/settings before warranty, some OC'd components will out-live limited warranties by a long shot. It's more of a gamble than a true science, but if you play your cards right and follow a path to overclocking safely and within realistic constraints to your cooling and true needs not your desired "wants" from your PC, you will be fine.

BTW, you don't increase voltage by increasing watts, wattage output is a completely different rating for a CPU.

Thanks, I'm pretty happy with the guide overall, granted a bit aged now-a-days. I am glad it's still helping others, definately the goal there! This guide turned 2 on May 1st it appears, damn..I forget how long I've been around on TPU, I gained most all of my OC-ing experience here on this forum from very helpful users, I felt like giving back and helping future new users. I typed up a lot of the guide (unless otherwise noted as donated info). There's a lot of experience, and TPU experience donation in this guide, which is why I feel it ended up turning out very well.

I'd update it with more current stuff and some newer OC info, but there's so many good guides that cover that I feel mine is pretty good as-is. As always if you have some useful info you feel should be added or something needs to be changed feel free to contact me. Thanks for the support!

Hey freakb, welcome to TPU Forums. I'd recommend you start a new thread on the Overclocking and Cooling section along with more detailed PC specs, you can also fill out the system specs in your User CP so anyone can see them.

A few questions I would have would be, what is this very good heatsink, what kind of power supply/psu are you using, what is it rated for, can you be more specific on the ram installed? And is the q6600 a g0 or b3 stepping (get cpu-z to find out). Get a new thread started and you'll find more users willing to help, but please read through the beginning of this guide/article to see a better way to write out your system specs so we can better understand what you're running and give you suggestions that are better within the safe limits of your hardware.

I just got a q6600 installed yesterday and thanks to it I know the BIOS of my board by heart now

I found it trickier to overclock than other chips, but you will learn a lot.

I have one advice for you: Always keep an eye on the northbridge temperatures.
