New 5770 heatsinks

They've got heatpipes and are a little cheaper than the full cover ones. Would these be worth buying over the full cover ones?

Wiz's review of the HIS 5770 seemed to indicate even the stock heatsink provided decent temps, so i can't imagine this would be worse. Hopefully the fan noise is what's improved.

If you look at the 4770's you'll see the same story - 2 different heatsinks like you describe.
The one you linked doesn't have the heatsink over the the memory modules.
But who knows how they overclock until you test it?

That I'm aware of, but do the original coolers have memsinks? I can't see since they're.. well... fully covered.

it won't matter, on the backs of the 5770's the memory is not cooled and ECC would kick in anyway.

I bought an Asus 5770 with this cooler. My idle temps are in the mid-high 30's. My max temp was 60 C while playing the Left 4 Dead 2 demo. Playing around in the Heaven Benchmark for a while in DX 11 put it up to 75 C

I haven't really tried to max out the core. So far I've only bumped the core to 1,000 MHz. I turned the fan up to 100%. It's definitely not as loud as my friends 4890 but it is audible, maybe about half as loud. It idles at 31C with the fan maxed. I haven't tried the memory at all.

It this is so, this cooler is no better than the stock cooler

I guess Asus as always goes for the most "Cost Effective" way, that is cost effective for them not for the customer.

The stock fan is a nice marketing gag. Testing Stalker COP@max temps are rising to 79 C at stock speed and the fan is running at only 53% on auto, but thats already very loud.

Dunno how much a closed case would help, but 100% fanspeed sure would cause some serious earbleeding.

I hope Arctic will come up with a revised accelero soon.

All you need to do is to reduce the fan speed to 45%

Who told you that 79C is high for a graphic card?

Stock everything is inaudible. Havent tested much yet though, been working all day.

I guess I should have said it was only audible at 100%, otherwise it's like others have said. I can't hear it over my other fans. I also got these temps with a closed case, if that makes a difference.

My max core speed seems to be 1,025Mhz. I tried 1,050Mhz and it was wouldn't even pass the CCC test.

I bought it for the free shipping. When I bought it, it was the same price as the others with this cooler. I usually buy Sapphire.

Also I meant the price for same cooling capacity as the other fan. I wasn't being brand specific. Right now they are all the same anyway, no matter the brand.

This is the reference HD5770 heatsink. Lacking heat pipes.

The new heat sink has a better designed heat sink with heat pipes.

The surface area of that new heatsinks isn't as big as you think,
and the reference cooler uses a vapor chamber as its base.

If I were you, I will wait for a non-reference that is actually better than the reference cooler.

Edit: that thick copper base is a crime.

Some test will have to be done between the two for comparison.

I think the egg shape will win because it has the heat pipes and appears to be made of copper which is a good material for dissipating heat.

I doubt it, since that copper block is awfully thick on the egg, and the vapor chamber on the stock heatsink will conduct heat much better to the base of all the fins.
I wouldn't mind picking up a 5770, since they seem to overclock very well!
