DirectX 9.L will be a DirectX 10 for Windows XP

DirectX 9.0 L is simply a renamed and refurbished DirectX 10 for Windows XP. It will make DirectX 10 games to work on Windows XP. Thanks to the 9.0 L version, XP users will be able to play games like Crysis on their current OS. One of the biggest issues is the fact that NVIDIA or ATI won't have any mainstream or entry-level cards until at least mid- to end of Q1 2007.

Well thats good to hear.. i geuss it wont matter much about NVIDIA or ATI mid range cards being late... since Vista is in the state it is in at the moment, most likely take MS a while to get sorted too

So does this make DX10 games "run" but have graphics of DX9? Or does it make DX10 games run like they would on vista? I'm guessing the latter since the mention of DX10 cards.

no doubt developers are reluctant to make games strictly for Dx10 because if they did they would alienate atleast 90% of the pc games players and seriously hamper sales, i bet they made micro$oft comprimise otherwise they would either use OpenGL. I Exspect M$ to make Dx11 within 12 months of vista's release, mark my words.

Well it aint gonna give us what our DX9 cards are not hardware capable of delivering unlike true DX10 so i recon it will give us "pegged down" DX10 but thats a good thing, look at it in the light of x800/850's not having SM3.0, it didnt stop millions buying them even tho they could get their hands on 6800's etc at times for no extra price (think about it, there are still millions of people out there who still have these cards who therefore still dont have SM3.0 but try to convince them that they are not enjoying their games or visuals), no doubt there will be more goodies on offer with DX10 and maybe a little Physics thrown in to boot but it aint the end of the world by any means for DX9 card owners, some would say that there would have to be a HUGE difference in order to convince people that their good DX9 cards no longer produce pretty graphics, anyways, just how pretty is pretty?

Dx9L will be a purposefully retarded version of the API and the excusse for the poor gameplay it will cause in the newer games will be because the games are made for windows Vista

At the end of the day, someone out there was always going to hack DX10 for XP so this doesn't really suprise me.

Well eventualy all enthusiasts will move to vista 1year plus after its release when it gets better support with software and hardware manufactures and when the majority of bugs will get irroned out. This was also the case with win xp and its embedded directx 8 back in 2001 when people said it was a ressorce hug and how they will stay on their win 98 and 2000 because it has better support and it takes less ressorces and if im not mistaken they also got support for directx 8 latter on. And now 5years after its releas all of you are happily using your win xp and thats also going to happen to vista. So give it time to evolve and im shure in a matter of i dont know a year or two we all will be also very happy using our vistas and looking back on win xp as a thing of a past and thats how the development goes in this world you have to move on and not stay still because if you do you get run over by the increasingly fast development of technoligy and also of other important aspects of our life (I hope i havent moralised to much;-))

DX 9 crowd is way to large to expect them to convert. Like one poster already said, it will hurt sales. PC gaming companies are not going to jump ship just yet on DX 9 nor will your average Joe for vista for that matter. I think it's time to read the writing on the wall with Vista and DX10.

So, I guess I'll be getting a mid-range DX10 card next year, and use this to play DX10 games on XP. Then about a year later, when Vista has (much) less bugs, that's when I'll get it.

Still many people play on the Xbox already on Live, and when you guys get Halo 2 for Vista, we'll be playing Halo 3. So either way, you're behind.
