Hey, I should be acquiring a new motherboard tomorrow but I don't ahve another case to put it in...
With regards to running a naked system, how do I go about this? I mean as far as I can figure out, just putting it on a cardboard box and plugging everything in should go okay, right? But in terms of cooling, will a big like 14" desk fan be enough to cool everything if I just blow it over the motherboard? Thanks =D

Everything should be fine. Just make sure there is nothing metallic under the motherboard to cause a short.

about the only thing i recommend doing other then what is shown in the pic is use something to get the mobo lifted off the box alittle. You can use stand-offs like you would in a case(don't have to put holes in the box just screw them into the board like normal) or use little plastic thumb tacks even thumb screws work nicely if you have alot of them. it makes sure there can't be a short and helps keep the bottom side of the board cool

You still need to find a way to power up the pc, with a jumper or something.

Hmmm, thanks
![]() About the PSU also though, will it be okay upside down? Cos mine has a fan on the bottom, so I don't think it'll enjoy sucking on a table Hmm true, how do I do that?

hit the pins on the motherboard with a screwdriver, it will boot. Effectively you just need to short the two pins.

PSUs are fine upside down also you can sit it on its side.. If you have a old case you could get the wires going to the power switch. also if you have a 3pin fan that is dead or broken you could cut the wires off and use that. It has 3 pins and only 2 are needed but still works like a charm thats what i use for one of my rigs

Touch a screwdriver/knife to the 2 motherboard header pins for power.
Regarding cooling... If you have powered normal component fans on parts (CPU / Video / etc), typically cooling is better than in a case

For that exact reason :P The temps are still rubbish tho, it's just a hot room ![]() So any screwdriver against the 2 power pins will do? What about if I want a hard shutdown?

if you want a hard shut down flip the switch on the PSU or just short the power pins with the screwdriver again

Hmm thanks guys, I'll post up again tomorrow with the results
The motherboard I'm getting is known to be defective (P5N32 SLi Deluxe) I'm getting hold of it to try and see if it can be fixed, or find what's wrong with it at least Cos if I get it working it'd be a second SLi rig, which would be sweeeeeet! ![]() I mentioned in another thread what happened to it, was a loud bang, then the onboard sound did not function even after several formats, and the system got progressively slower and constantly crashed to the point of instability Any ideas as to what that might've been?

Did this when I had my old pentium 3, worked fine, no worries here, aint complicated. Problem is, I had a friend, a jerk who spilled beer on my hdd and it fried. So if you ve got friends like these, just keep em out of the room!

PSU's are fine on their side or upside down. Just make sure air flow is uninhibited. I use the PSU intake to keep the HDD cool. Naked rigs run cooler than cased rigs. Good luck!

![]() Makes mine look weak and loserish ![]() Didn't know a moving-parts hard drive would enjoy working at such an angle :P Is it okay to put the mobo on vinyl also? Cos my desk is like vinyl wood effect on chipboard Cos that way I can have both the PCs next to eachother and swap the monitor cables whenever I need to use one instead of the other =D

You have expensive stuff sitting in front of an open window. Of course, they'd be electrocuted if they tried to enter through the window... XD
