As the title says "Arctifacts in the BIOS and stripes in windows" ,I have this problem after my system was shipped by fedex(before that it ran fine). I found that my gigabyte p35 motherboard had a damaged pci express socket and bought a new motherboard which I installed today. Now I was still having the same arctifacts and stripes with my new asus pq5 plus se mobo, so I was dissapointed that the problem wasn't solved with the new mobo:(
So it must be my HD 4870, took the heatsink off, could not find anything(visible) that would cause this problem, tried the system one more time without heatsink on the vga card and there was no screen at all. I've ordered a brandnew HIS 4870 today.
In some other forum I was reading about that bad ram could cause such stripes?
I got 4gigs of GEIL ram and my board does not make any beep assume that my ram is fine.
But weird that there is no screen at all when I tried to fire up the system without vga heatsink.
The core chip was lukewarm when i touched it but now no stripes, no BIOS, nothing on the screen. Tuesday I have the new vga card and please tell me that the problem is solved with this... (worried)...:(

BTW: wishing everyone a Happy New Year!!!

I certainly sounds like the video card.

If you are concerned that it's the RAM, try taking out a stick and running, then swapping with the other (assuming you have two sticks).

On almost all computers, the video BIOS is copied to system RAM on boot. This makes things run much faster. So bad RAM could cause what you are describing - but not very likely.

Oh - Happy New Years back!

Edit: Did I read correctly that you ran the video card bare with no heatsink??? If so, it's probably destroyed.

Yes I did fire up the system without the HS on the vga but that was after I ordered the new HIS vga , but the core was lukewarm, just nothing on the screen anymore.
About the memory sticks, I took them out and tried them one by one , no beeps from the mobo, so I assume that the memory sticks are fine.

I really hope so...

If there would be a problem with the CPU now(since there was nothing on the screen anymore), I assume the new asus mobo would beep?..

Probably... just don't run the CPU with no heatsink, or you'll have more useless hardware.

No I won't do that....:D
Hope it all runs fine again with my new HIS vga next Tuesday.

Why you run the graphic card without HSF???

If it was the graphic card that was heating up , all you had to do is take the HSF off clean the GPU the PUT some AS (Termal Paste) & PUT BACK the HSF on the CARD...that would probably fixed it , if that was the problem?

But now thx to you your graphic card is dead! what a shame :shadedshu

Was that card warrenty?

stripes usually mean that the card is damaged due to heat, when the core reaches the magic number 105C, after that, boom stripes

Warranty in the country I bought it a few months ago, I can't send it back.

But it was already damaged before I took off the HS.
But later on with the HS off it felt lukewarm, anyways I really hope that the problems are solved with the new vga card.

Could also be cause by the cable or the plug not in correctly in the card as for temps he never said anything about it & some cards have a max of 120c (my old 6600GT) but yeah you dont want to reach the max temp of the card that is bad...

But i'm not sure that was his problem... will see when he'll get the new card in the board...?

when you reach over 105, it permanently damages core, may not kill it but is still slightly damaged, i know i had a 1650XT at 150C, but usually red lines are NOT caused by a cable

I got a new HIS HD 4870 (iCooler x3) , stripes are gone and everything runs fine.
However I must say this one does not overclock that well, my previous HIS HD 4870 (Fan 1GB) came with Qimonda gddr5 and that seemed to OC much better then my new card fitted with Hynix gddr5 ..:(

So.. you may have damaged the RAM on the old card, causing the stripes you talked about. Common for cards with damaged RAM

Try to be more conservative when OCing your gfx mate ;)

Someone else used my pc for gaming and it seemed they used it without the fans spinning that i had attached and my hardware was damaged from this.

The new HIS has a 900MHz clock on the memory speed, I get arctifacts with a mild 930 OC..:shadedshu

Ok it runs fine at stock speed but just a bit dissapointed with this brandnew HIS.
Hynix gddr5 does not like to be OC'd.

That's gotta suck..
You sure the system's getting enough power, as well as cooling?

4870s were never known to be champ overclockers to begin with if u want an overclocking 4k card u need a 4770 or a 4890 the 4870s were just never really that great at overclocking

I replaced the x3 cooler with a thermalright cooler and I sticked heatsinks on the hynix chips and all cooled by a 120mm fan it does not seem to help much.

My old HIS could run 1050 memory speed and that was also 900@stock speed.

I bought the 4870 over an 5770 since these are 128bit and overall performance from this new card was a bit lower then the "older" 4870

usually the 5770 will run circles around the 4870 a heavily overclocked and still MUCH cooler runnings 5770 can easily catch a 4890 and can on occasion catch the slightly faster gtx 275 usuall the 5770 is better then a 4870 but less then a 4890

and 128bit GDDR5 is still the equal of 256bit GDDR3

example of this is the ati 4770 vs a 4850 the 4770 is suppose to be slower but in many cases is equal to the 4850 (4770 uses GDDR 5 128bit the 4850 uses GDDR3 256bit)
and the 4770 was when overclocked could show a 15-20% performance increase same holds true with the 4870 vs 5770 the 4870 has slightly more balanced card overall but the 5770 just overclocks and walks all over the 4870

a bit late to this party here but just adding my $1....

Stripes in bios & Windows is definitely graphics card related - it can happen for other reasons too - such as the cable to the monitor not being attached in properly.

but the main reason in my experience & which has also been confirmed by others of the same problem I have come across is that the memory on the graphics card is/has become corrupted.

Im not exactly sure how it happends myself, maybe you've been touching the graphics card a lot which may have resulted in static shock partialling frying/killing the card.

HEAT as others have mentioned will make the card ARTIFACT & artifacts are generally white dots or images that are all messed up that look like 'spikes' & ARTIFACTING is not to be confused with what you are currently experiencing or have experienced.

but discolored stripes is definitely a case of corrupt memory on graphics cards even though how it happends can be a bit of an anomaly. but just make sure you handle the card correctly when you put it in...try not the touch the components on the card itself if possible as static may damage it & make sure the fan on the card is spinning when you have the system powerd up to make sure its being cooled properly.

memory corruption is not so much a rare case, but if it happends it happends & theres not a lot you can do about it.

just gotta learn how to handle your hardware carefully to avoid electrostatic damage.

.:EDIT:.

& yeah - trying the card without the heatsink on is a pretty silly thing to do especially on a 4870 - they heat up like a muvaf**ker so Im not really suprised it didnt boot again. If the card was still under warranty I would have just tried contacting HiS for RMA service.

Yeah, I overclocked the bollox off an old 9800 Pro....it was running sweet at first, then BANG, red stripes = fried RAM on the card :(

Might have been said.. but never overlook the artifacting with inadequate or fluctuating power supply. I just say this because the same could happen to your 'new' card if the problem wasn't the card itself last time.. Or in other words, if the 'cause' of the old card to artifact wasn't solved by replacing the card itself.

I've seen it happen a few times where, even a good name brand PSU of proper wattage, was causing multiple GPU's to fail at random intervals.

Probably not your case.. but just something to keep an eye on.
