Found a nice Intel SSD available... is this the good one?

SSDSA2MH080G2C1
http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/rese...ture/index.htm

This is the model i found. Should i get this one? Is it gen2? no crappy firmware? what else should i know about this

And write speed, only 80MBps? Corsair P128 has 200MBps

So?

I believe this is Gen2 and the firmware is good (02G9), but wait for someone else to post who can verify.

This may help as well:

dual 40GBs (129 ea) is cheaper than one 80GB (299 ea) intel SSD. Since there's no moving parts, it's also more reliable than normal HDDs in RAID.

What is the obsession with writes? All I ever hear is that write speeds are low, who cares? You are talking about 40GB drive, you aren't installing much... Read (both sequential and random) and random write are the important things. Seqential writes are only used in installing programs, and so the only time it matters is when you reinstall your OS. 90% of the time all you are going to be doing is reading and random writes. And random write speeds suck on mechanical HDD's and most SSD's except the Intel drives.

Exactly the same as the intel drives minus trim. So perfect for RAID0. Infact, I am considering picking one up as an OS drive. After a SSD mech drives suck.

That link at Amazon says it is coming from Buy.com.

The Buy.com page for this drive says the following:

Currently Unavailable: This item is currently unavailable from the Manufacturer.

Amazon has their own in-house drives at a slightly higher price.

SSD's are worth it as boot drives, in my opinion. I don't mind having my games and some programs on mechanical hard drives but the OS just feels so much snappier on a SSD. Also programs that you open everyday, multiple times a day would benefit from being on a SSD. Programs such as Microsoft Office, your internet browser (just put the cache on a small ram disk), etc. So the short answer, yes I would say a SSD is a very nice upgrade for even an aging system. Do other things have priority? Absolutely, if you are someone who games every day then a new graphics card might be more beneficial. If you are constantly running out of RAM, you might want to upgrade that first. But for those of us with bleeding edge systems, or those of us with systems that fit our needs fine a SSD is worth every penny because of the speed increase they provide.
