Samsung Announces Massive, High-Performance 2 TB Eco-friendly HDDs
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology today announced the F3EG, its new high-performance environmentally-friendly HDD (hard disk drive) for the desktop market. The EcoGreen F3EG, a higher capacity model from its predecessor the F2EG, features 2TB capacity with 500GB per disk that is capable of storing up to 880 hours of DVD video or 500,000 or more songs in MP3 format. With increased recording density, the EcoGreen F3 drive is more power efficient by supporting a capacity up to 2TB with four disks.
“Storage-hungry multimedia professionals, gamers and home PC users continue to increase the amount of video, music, photo and other personal data they store and back-up,” said In Cheol Park, vice president, Storage Sales, Samsung Electronics. “The F3EG delivers all the benefits of a low-power drive yet features high performance and is environmentally friendly.” ![]() The F3EG utilizes Samsung’s EcoTriangle technology to provide eco-friendly components, low-power and low-noise operation technology to its ‘EcoGreen’ hard drives. Eliminating halogen compound and brominated flame retardant from the PCBA, the new model is produced with eco-friendly materials and meets all the environmental regulations including RoHS (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) which is being applied worldwide as well as the European Union. Samsung’s new hard drive utilizes its low noise operation technology SilentSeek and NoiseGuard to achieve quiet operation. In addition, with its advanced design and fewer components, the F3EG drive is 40 percent lower in power consumption in idle mode and 10 percent lower in reading/writing mode than competitive drives. The drive received a zero percent failure rate in the unstable voltage environment test. The EcoGreen Series has been selected as the best-in-class in the area of power consumption for two straight years by IDEMA Japan (International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association) in the performance comparison test of HDDs. The F3EG incorporates a 3.0 Gb/s SATA interface, Native Command Queuing features and a 16MB/32MB buffer memory. The 3.5” F3EG drive is available in 1.5TB and 2TB capacities in the United States and EU markets with a MSRP of $179.99. |

that is a good price with sata 3 and NQC , wonder about reliability
Whats so facepalm about ??? The F3EG utilizes Samsung's EcoTriangle technology to provide eco-friendly components, low-power and low-noise operation technology to its ‘EcoGreen' hard drives.

Hear hear for samsung. I guess these will spin at 5400RPM then, but due to the 500GB density will still bench with high numbers.

I really hate this press release marketing BS. They are boasting about how fokkin 'green' the thing is through a half page but they can't give a single number with actual power consumption. Fokkin BS.

They go from like 15W for a regular drive (major estimation) down to slighter higher than half that, with a noticeable loss in speed.

Not too bad. The "EcoFriendly" thing kinda makes me want to *not* get it.
I assume the $179 price tag is for the 2TB slice? If so, that's pretty good.

from my experience, a typical HDD (with 3-4 platters) uses 15W to spin up, 7-8W at idle and 10-12W when reading/writing

I'm all for low power consumption devices that use non-polluting (or less polluting) material, but the marketing speak in this press release is enough to gag even the most seasoned news reader.
Marketing person + sword + fall on it = Win. Just my opinion.

I'll never understand why they are bragging about disk power cinsumption so much.
I'd understand for corporate SAS drives where you can have dozens of them and there it counts, but in home environment where you have just 1 or 2 of them, it's just a friggin 15W. Why don't they brag about it where it counts. For example CPU's, gfx cards, LCD panels. That's where over 100W of power goes out the window while operating. And they're making a big deal out of 15W. Lol.

Also, they're a lot quieter - which will make me more powerful than you can ever imagine matters to lots of people.

some of them vary between 5,400 and 7,200. they just slow down at idle (which is awesome, imo)
edit: also, what Wile E says below me

My 1.5TB F2 Ecos are just as fast as my F1 1TBs. With these platter densities, 5400 does not hurt the performance much at all.
