XFX Preps Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 4GB Eyefinity6 Graphics Accelerator

It looks like Sapphire and ASUS will not be the only AMD board partners out with a custom design Radeon HD 5970 graphics accelerator that has higher clock speeds and twice the amount of memory. XFX seems just about ready with what it calls the XFX Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 4GB. This limited edition graphics card borrows heavily from AMD's reference design, but adds some changes:
  • The leaf-blower is centrally located, with a GPU system on its either sides.
  • GPUs use higher clock speeds of 850 MHz (core), 1200 MHz (memory).
  • Twice the amount of memory, 2 GB per GPU, 4 GB total.
  • ATI Eyefinity6 display output configuration: 6 mini-DisplayPort connectors to support six physical displays (dongles may be included for DVI users).
  • Power is drawn from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors.

XFX may manufacture upto 1500 pieces in all, and could price each piece around US $1000, with sales starting later this month.

Why they put fan in the middle? Is it better than on the right side? The hot air from one GPU will go inside case

Yes i would not like to get half the amount of heat my 5970 exhaust at load inside my case. That would be unoptimal hehe.
Also the cooling dont seem to be upgraded just divided, so expect high temps on load, much like a OCed 5970
Also pic looks shoped hehe
Uhm it looks longer so the heatsink might be longer too

fan in the middle should mean temps for both gpu's will be identical or close to it, not one slightly hotter than the other, but as i understand it the 5970 walks all over the 4870x2 for both gpu temps being closer together.

The heat from one GPU doesn't heatup the other GPU.

GPU<-GPU<-FAN

vs
GPU<-FAN->GPU

It'll help the gpu's to remain cool in the overclocked situation.

To bad I didn't win one of the cards at cebit yesterday

the heatsink is an odd thing though, cause it looks like AMD made, could this be a new ref design for it.

I think its a new reference design

or is t eyefinity only

That's ok. This card is more of a something designed for open benches. Even if in cases, it shouldn't be that hot. NVIDIA did this with its GTX 295. There was nothing adversely wrong with that design.

I would say most people that could afford such a card would also be able to afford a decent high airflow case.

Or even put the thing under water/dice/liquid heliums.

I dont think there will be blocks for that card since is a custom design
My 5970 do get different temps on cores, like 5-8C different
Also i know that it worked with nvidia, I have one, though the 295 is a lot cooler than a OCed 5970

at least XFX is a little bit smarter than ATI:a 5970 is much more powerful to run 6 displays than just a 5870.This could just be the ideal card for those rich bastards with 6 24" displays who want to play WoW.

but it will probably cost an arm...and it will be actually longer than one.

Many manufacturers are making this card; 4gb, eyefinity, dual 5870 at full speed.. (sapphire, xfx, asus..)
Is this a new ati reference card? Like 5830, and then, manufacturers can make a custom design.

ATI have given out higher binned chips and a new reference board and then said " GO NUTS!" to their partners.
