Need a Graphics Card...Experts please advise

6 months back i sold my 9800 gt to buy a fermi...now nvidia is planning to release fermi....but my budget is 350 $ max...don't have extra cash....i ve read that mainstream fermi will come this summer..
Now I am planning to buy 5850.I am not an overclocker...and not interested in multi monitor setup's too
but i have some doubts about this card and drivers...

1)can i get good fps in windows xp ?found some fps issues in xp user .I am planning to use win xp 32 and win 7 32 bit (games I play-motogp08/crysis/shift/dirt2)

2)read about problems in watching youtube videos and HD videos...is it solved now?

3)I am planning to buy sapphire 5850 .....i found some users reporting GSOD issues....is this a hardware or a software issue? (heard a news that ATI is planning to release 6 series GPU's soon..)

4)any BSOD 's due to this card? I ll use my pc almost 16 hours a day

5)after getting this card can i use cd drivers or I have to choose better drivers from net ? & which version of driver ?

6)I am using creative platinum x- fi sound card...is there any audio problem due to this gfx card ?(found some user reported problem in using creative sound cards...)
7)Is it a good idea to wait for mainstream fermi cards?

Experts PLZ give detailed advice for the above queries ....

Afaik the 5000 problems have been resolved, now I may be wrong. It's up to you really, if you want to wait for fermi or not, as you might now, it won't come cheap! If I were you, a safe bet would be the 5850, it comes @ $300, so you can keep the cash lol. I'd also want to wait a bit (fermi) but as you know well, the more you wait, the more you'll end up waiting, especially with computer tech.

Personally, I'd stay with the 5850. Most of the issues you mentionned above are pretty much a thing of the past.

Fermi worries me a lot concerning power consumption and I don't like the way Nvidia is going with their products. My 2 cents...

Assaulter beat me to it

XP will be fine.

2)read about problems in watching youtube videos and HD videos...is it solved now?

Yes such things dont make the card bad to begin with their simply driver issues.

3)I am planning to buy sapphire 5850 .....i found some users reporting GSOD issues....is this a hardware or a software issue? (heard a news that ATI is planning to release 6 series GPU's soon..)

The 6 series MIGHT be out at the end of this year. But that doesnt mean that the 5 series will collect dust bunnies. Besides this has been the trend for years. If you keep wating for the next generation you will stay on the PC you have now until you die of old age. The GSOD issue was a catalys problem that was fixed several versions ago.

4)any BSOD 's due to this card? I ll use my pc almost 16 hours a day

No This is also usually due to driver problems. However none have been officially reported. You might be able to find people with these issues but their usually user problems such as but not limited too 1. having a rediculously weak power supply. and 2. running alpha or beta drivers. Stick with WHQL and dont try to run your system on 300w simple.

5)after getting this card can i use cd drivers or I have to choose better drivers from net ? & which version of driver ?

You say this is your first ATI card but its almost like youve never bought one aftermarket before. You can use the CD driver but by the time you buy the card it will probably be out dated. So just download them from the internet from AMD's website. As for what version to get they make it simple. First choose your Os then choose x64 or x32 then choose your card and hit ok. It brings you to the correct download page and you click download now. its real simple.

6)I am using creative platinum x- fi sound card...is there any audio problem due to this gfx card ?(found some user reported problem in using creative sound cards...)

I wouldnt doubt it. but no their isnt Most likely it was a problem with the creative card itself. their famous for not so great drivers. Infact I cant see how a graphics card could really ever effect a sound card.

7)Is it a good idea to wait for mainstream fermi cards?

not a chance. they will probably be out of your price range and incredably hot. However you might be inclined to wait if your wating for the 5 series price drop that will surely happen after fermi hits the market.

Experts PLZ give detailed advice for the above queries ....

4)any BSOD 's due to this card? I ll use my pc almost 16 hours a day

I get them once in a blue moon at start up but again -it's a driver thing and it boots 2nd time no probs. I had the same issues with my GTX295 (Nvidia) Makes me think it's a crossfire/sli driver issue.

5)after getting this card can i use cd drivers or I have to choose better drivers from net ? & which version of driver ?

Follow solaris' advice

6)I am using creative platinum x- fi sound card...is there any audio problem due to this gfx card ?(found some user reported problem in using creative sound cards...)

I have heard of this but it's always the audio drivers. Can clash with any card (ATI or NV)

7)Is it a good idea to wait for mainstream fermi cards?

To wait for an unreleased and untested card that has been delayed for manufacturing problems for at least half a year? Are you nuts? Go 5850 or GTX 285 if you are that wary of ATI but the 5850 is better than any GT200 series single card unless you want Physx or CUDA.

I would recommend either the HD 5850 or the HD 5870. Both cards may go down in price a little once NVIDIA releases it's Fermi cards in quantity.

ATI Radeon 5800 series will do a fine job. You shouldn't have any issues, most if not all have already been resolved.

2)read about problems in watching youtube videos and HD videos...is it solved now?
This really has nothing to do with the Graphics Card. Make sure you have the correct video codecs installed along with the proper online flash plugin(s).

3)I am planning to buy sapphire 5850 .....i found some users reporting GSOD issues....is this a hardware or a software issue? (heard a news that ATI is planning to release 6 series GPU's soon..)6 series is coming out but not for a long while. We expect a 5 seres refresh B4 we see any 6 series IMO. It's a good time for HD 5800's and even better once Fermi gets released providing ATI drops prices.

4)any BSOD 's due to this card? I ll use my pc almost 16 hours a day
It was already answered for U

5)after getting this card can i use cd drivers or I have to choose better drivers from net ? & which version of driver ?
No, I don't recommend the CD's drivers. Stick with the newest ATI drivers found on there website.6)I am using creative platinum x- fi sound card...is there any audio problem due to this gfx card ?(found some user reported problem in using creative sound cards...)
Not that I've heard of, many here use Creative with ATI Radoen cards.

7)Is it a good idea to wait for mainstream fermi cards?
It all depends whether Fermi will really have heat issues. So far Fermi rumours don't look good at all. Personally I think ATI won this round already. Radeon 5000 was a success.
Experts PLZ give detailed advice for the above queries ....

wait for fermi its so close now,,,
5850 wont disapoint i got it when it came out and never had a problem, best card i owned yet, it consumes little power when idle, drivers are constantly improving, and overclocks like a beast
i benchmarked it back in october at these speeds im sure the score would be diff now with latest drivers

as for the fermi, if those specs are the final thing, wow GeForce GTX 480 : 512 SP looks potent

With 5870's:
I can tell you there are a few issues with the menus in the steam version of bioshock I have noticed. It isn't a hardware issue. It is just driver issues. As time goes by these issues are usually fixed though.

ALWAYS USING LATEST DRIVER not only for ATI card, but also Nvidia card too.

If you using HDMI connector to your HDTV, make sure you're update your soundcard drivers before using this feature to prevent bugs.

maybe GTX 470 are same price range, with same performance.

Mind pointing out how my 5870 is unstable? Because I'm sure not seeing this instability.

You're going to love your 5870.

+1 Here. Actually, my 5850's are the most stable cards I've owned in many years, and the clock like crazy. This comes from a guy who bought nothing but Nvidia over the last few years.

There is really no reason to overthink this. The 5850 is faster than the 470, less power consumption, and much cooler. Unless you fold, the 5850 is the only logical choice.
