Microsoft Security Essentials
I've started using this av on my main computer. So far, it seems pretty good. The scans take a while, but it's otherwise light on resources and it's pretty good real-time protection. It already caught something for me today...
What's your opinion on this AV? Is there a better, free solution? I already use malwarebytes and spybot, both nice additions, but they're really only good for scanning for something once I already suspect it's there... |

Another thing to mention is that I've never once had me ask if an application was ok... I hate it when I get asked "are you sure?" questions all day every day.

Currently using it on all of my computers and I can say it's the best I've ever used. Low profile, easy to use, and updated often. It seems to catch everything and handles those bad bits very effectively. 5 Stars from muah.

i just voted it one star because its terrible try throwing a brontok worm at it and you will see how well it works.
It does have basic protection but that's about it, i would call msse windows defender 7. Avg+Malware bytes works much better and for those real bad infections Combofix cannot be beat.

There's always some muppet who tries to muck up a poll Hat, human nature unfortunately...
I too have been using it since 7 came out. Its caught a couple of things and I don't appear to have any nasties onboard. I gave it 5*, can't beat free, lightweight and unobtrusive. I also think its a bonus it being made by Microsoft, a)because hopefully they know their code better than anyone else and b)because they have a vested interest in improving the security reputation of Windows!

My point is for us tech users where not going to fall for the bs XP Anti spyware crap. so if we get hit with something its going to have to be something nasty in that instance MSSE isnt going to do jack squat.

Nice product. MS just successfully killed off a bunch of 3rd party virus software makers.

Currently using it on all of my computers and I can say it's the best I've ever used. I have 5 computers in most of the bedrooms of my house and run MSE on all of them. I use to run AVG till it got to be a resource hog and would not remove alot of todays virus's. I've had the dreaded Antivirus 2010 on 2 computers and MSE was the only one that would completely remove it without me having to do a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Microsoft knows what exploits people are using and know their code better than anybody else, so who better to write an antivirus program than microsoft. I give it 5 stars and will continue to use it till I find something better.

So the overall feeling here is that (especially for a WINDOWS program!) MSSE is light, durable, non-intrusive, easy to run, constantly kept up to date and highly effective. If it cannot stop a masterminded back-door trojan, well, I guess it joins the ranks of any other antivirius program that was bested! But in contrast to the old regurgitated security suits, like Norton, McAfee, AVG(used to be good), Kaspersky(too many compatibility issues) or etc, it does a pretty good job. Oh and it's 100% free.

I have run Windows OS's without AV for many years. I find that the majority of viruses and malware can be avoided by being savvy on what you do and where you go on the internet. AdblockPlus and NoScript for firefox probably helps there too. MSE is the first time I've put an AV on my computers and it does a good job of not irritating me or slowing computer down.

MSE is great. There are only two things that totaly suck:
- updater is garbage - why on Earth they perform on-access/real-time archive scanning!?!?!?!?
