What CPU is more Powerful?

Ok this is a simple question, just wanted to know what CPU is more powerful.

Intel Celeron mobile processor900 (2.2GHz, 800FSB)

Or the

AMD Athlon Neo 64 single-core processor 1.60GHz

The intel will be faster, although it will probably be paired with intel integrated graphics (a gma450 perhaps) which will have poor hardware decoding support for hd video whereas the amd neo will be paired with at least a HD3200 which does have hardware decoding built in.

If the intel comes with an amd or nvidia graphics chip then ignore the next sentence, as the intel would win hands-down if it comes with amd or nvidia graphics).

Basically the graphics with the amd one should be better (if the celeron comes with intel integrated graphics), and the amd one can playback hd video with no problems (the intel one might not be able to), but the intel processor is faster and if you don't intend to play back HD video then the intel processor will be faster for normal usage (internet browsing, word processing etc).

I think the Amd will be faster because the intel is based in NetBurst and the Amd in K7, and we all know that K7 PWNS NetBurst. If the celeron is based on the conroe-L, then it will be on par or faster than the athlon, otherwise the athlon is faster.

it's a 45nm 64 bit capable intel (launched Q1 2009), which means it's conroe based (and thus clock-for clock pretty even with the neo but with the advantage of running faster).

Oh, i thought it was netburst based. Then yes, the Celeron is quite a bit faster than the amd.

IIRC Intel never released a 64bit capable netburst chip - only conroe or more recent cores can handle 64bit (always the best way to spot if it is a netburst or conroe based chip, although some dud conroe chips were 32bit only under the celeron brand). Of course i'm ignoring itanium, but if someone is looking at buying one of those they should know what they are doing

Thanks for all your replies seems like the Celeron is the faster CPU.

Im not looking for a laptop for me, i run a business and and was wondering what would be the faster choice since the person who wants this computer wont be gaming, just useing it for internet, word, excel etc and thats it, and the prices for all these laptops that i can get them for are around the same price.

Celerons aren't worth the silicon they are printed on. I'd go with Neo.

Seems to be a lot of negative stigma towards the celerons since they are the bargain bin chips - but the celeron 900 is a single-core penryn which is actually a very good chip with a 35w tdp - the amd neo is a half-breed between the athlons and phenoms (pretty nice chip to be honest) but clock-for-clock it is just a tad below penryn. Due to this the celeron is definately faster - it would be faster if they were the same clockspeed but because the celeron has a 600mhz advantage as well as being faster clock-for-clock i don't see why people are saying the neo is better.

Much as i love the neo for kicking intel atoms' ass in the mobile performance space (but losing out on heat output and power) it cannot compete with a penryn based celeron (especially one running 600mhz faster).

What will you be using the laptop for? If it's just for net browsing and office work, then go with the neo - it will provide longer battery life and they're usually paired up with a much more capable video card for things like hd videos. If you'd like to do something a bit heavier on the cpu like I dunno rendering, cad drafting, etc. then go for the celeron, but be warned they usually come with intel's own crappy gfx solutions.
