That's a lot of red/maroon in the GTX 480.

awesome pics
IMO it shows that the 480 and 5970 coolers cant keep up, as the entire PCB is being used as a heatsink.

But then the 5970 is longer and is composed of two GPUs. The 480 is shorter and is just one GPU, and apparently still hotter.

But HD 5970 has reason to be hot, gtx 480 does not just bad design imo.

Also shows that the MAX temps aren't all that bad compared to A.T.I. either

with the gtx480 and the 5970 it's obvious that cooling needs to be majorly addressed. but I guess if you can afford 500-700$ for a card you should be able to get a 80-120$ waterblock. |

Looks like everyone who tried to fry an egg on the 480 did it in the wrong side, of course the pcb side would short out..

Hehee, these are perfect shots to those obsessed about rear output fan. You still end up dumbing a lot of heat inside the case, so best is to have good airflow in case and use whatever cooler gives you the best temps.
But looking at the ramslots next to the hot card, those fan ramcoolers don't look that silly anymore. Although it looks like they only used one stick of memory. Something like 66C with 480, 60C with 5870, 65Cish with 5980. Another interesting thing is how much GTX480 has heated up the case bottom. No wonder they say if you SLI these you better have great airflow. Bottom card pushing 100C up and top card pushing 90C down, will be an inferno in the middle

Actually i was thinking of that exactly. The main problem is that we cool graphic cards from one side only. I was always wondering if it was technically possible to make a dual side cooler that is atteched to both sides of the GPU. I know the other side is not as hot as the one where cooler is touching the GPU directly, but so far all the cards that i owned had really hot other sides. All of them. And none had it cooled, either passive or active. I think a backpanel with thermal pad under it covering larger part of the other sides PCB over GPU should do it. These days they always cut out the part where GPU is making that useless...

![]() It cools the memory on the back of 5970 and also serves to keep stress off the PCB. The hole on the back plate is there because the coolers mounting bracket is there, and there are also many components on that area. ================================================== ================================================== ====== Anyways, an interesting thing about that GTX 480 shot is half of the cooler under and after the GPU looks as hot as the GPU itself. Efficient heat transfer or heat soaked cooler? Take your pick guys.

I can find a space heater for 20 bucks. That's nearly $480 in savings!
Very interesting photos.

I'm sure all the Fermi cards running will accelerate global warming, melt the polar ice caps and Jen-Hsun Huang will be tried for crimes against the planet, blah, blah, blah. |
