Why was SysTool discontinued?

wtf, why would you discontinue software that will always be able to be used?!

ohhh well thats is completely diffrent then a dis continuance of the software... meaning don't count on anything else..ever..

so i should submit my info somewhere? just don't bug the guy? it's got features i find useful that others don't.. like the hd acoustic settings..which were still on even tho i disabled them in bios..

well if your relieing on one guys yes.. even then, whenever something can be done, not matter how trivial.. like adding support for a single motherboard ever few months..because thats all you got time to do.. then so be it.. atleast those 500-1000+ people that use that board, that like this software as opposed to others.. can now use the software xD think about all the people that now come to techpowerup.. just because they've discovered software you've made...

theres alot of software out there basically community supported, that only one guy sopposedly has the final say and codes the software for final release.. it takes time..sometimes years.. but so far it's been worth it..

and from what your saying.. there is no point in me using this software..

meh, i guess i'm still gonna try to use it.. i'm sure there's something it'll allow me to tweak that other software might not be able to..i'll have to be careful, i almost burned out my bios trying diffrent MB profiles.. for the fsb overclocks..

one person alone made and updated this program, and its been discontinued.

Too much effort, too little help from mobo manufacturers and such.

Basically, it was impossible to make it work without personally testing it on every hardware combination that existed - and that wasnt gunna happen, so w1zzy spent his time elsewhere.

well thats what needs to be done with almost any software.. screw the mobo manufac's people will submit info, or test it for you.. but yea.. there is alot being missed if your not the one testing each platform personally.. but in the minds eye seems monumental..when you catually starting doing it.. you find it's not all that time consumeing..

boot-up test shutdown
pop in diffrent ram cpu, video card repeat..

obtain diffrent system repeat..

tho codeing in any regard is a monumental undertaking.. xD but is always there and doesnt change until you change it.. no matter how long it takes you to figure out where the bug is. =D

has he released the source code to the general public?

um, no?

but he never asked anyone to, buy or donate? did he? some people would give him the things he needed.. often i've been able to obtain new pc's just by provideing simple services for their prefered pc.. or w/e could be exchanged for fair trade / services.. like delivering food at no cost for something of equal value.. or playing taxi for friends with a suspended liscence haha.. there are ways to get shet for free haha.. alot of times you simply just have to ask..

too bad nobody's trying to overclock p2/3's i obtain those left and right.. free or low cost.. i have an old HP, cognac board i'm trying to overclock.. but havent found anything that works under ubuntu 8.04.

but future project sounds good xD good luck to ya!

because even if they WERE donated, its still a ton of work.

its not slap a mobo in, see what happens - its slap a mobo in, find out it doesnt work, program a module to support that chipset, test it, release it, find out certain motherboards with the same chipset dont work, code in some patches to make sure they all work the same and all work, then rinse and repeat.

two motherboards with the same chipset can use entirely different clock generators and sensors, requiring just way too much work - w1zz coulda gone open source and got the community to help... but he never has before, so why expect it now?

@pazsion

You're expecting a lot from one guy doing this for free. Often people that write these kind of programs get people criticising it unfairly and not giving good feedback, making the writer feel underappreciated and pissed off.

I bet if you offered W1zzard a substantial amount of cash to build you a custom copy for your needs, he'd be happy to help and it would be fair to pay him.

Of course, that kind of investment isn't gonna happen, is it? In short, if you get a free utility and it's useful to you, appreciate it for what it is and express your gratitude in the forum, but don't expect more and more all for free.

open source doesnt really work for this kind of stuff .. there's barely a handful of people in this scene who know how to write some hardware-relevant code. and most of these have their own projects already

i'm always available for discussion if someone needs concrete info on how x works

holy snap..

and word up to the idea of customized software.. Dont blame the guy for not putting his work in the open.. there are trade offs and risks there too.. some good some bad.

If i absolutely can not find anything that overclocks new / old school stuff like p2/p3's I may even invest in server grade mb's to achieve my goals..number crunching grid for a boinc project mostly..but w/e workload comes their way via storage space or cloud what have you.. if i think they are reliable enough to overclock even a litttle.. it would be very handy..and time saving in a on-demand world. haveing someone willing to work something up. Even if i end up cooking them myself..with many hours of time spent in R&D i'd still be willing to pay for having the ability to do so..

love how this forum works too! i'ma spend some time here i can feel it XD

When SysTool was first under development, W1zzard an I spent probably 40 hours trying to get it working right on ABiT motherboards with uGuru hardware...I had the board, he wrote a version, I tried it, etc, etc, etc...

That's 40 hours for one board, which could have been much easier if ABiT would have helped...

Anyway, I got to first-hand see the passion W1zzard throws into what he does...he doesn't give up easily...so if he stops something, it's for very good reason.

So, 40 hrs @ at least $25 an hour/per person = $1600 for one board.

And i think W1zzard is worth more than $25 an hour.

Wow, that's quite some development effort there, dude. I knew it was a lot, but I appreciate you quantifying the numbers. I'm not surprised though and it so sucks when big companies don't help, either.

Think about it: your utility makes their boards more useful to the knowledgeable computer techy market they're trying to appeal to, so hindering you just hinders their sales. It wouldn't surprise me if an open attitude to this sort of thing would have kept them in business to this day and would encourage competitors to do the same. Just how many awesome and properly functional system utilities would we have now if official support were given to people like yourselves? We all see how products take off when the modder community is welcomed in; I'm thinking of computer games like Half-Life and Valve games in particular, here.

Thanks for both your efforts here, guys.

I can't take any credit here though...all I did was testing really...and W1zzard did the hard stuff. Just thought I'd share, as I'm sure few people have had that sort of experience. That experience, however, really enlightened me to how much work really goes into development of a tool such as this...one fix might break something else...those two you get working, but it breaks a third thing...etc...

The continual development of CPU-Z, GPU-Z, and any other projects W1zz works on, are truly priceless.

yeah, well, I pawned those off on Rahim Jaffer a long time ago...

I really pulled that number out of nowhere...but many consider that a high wage. Not even 50k a year though, so it's peanuts, really. Sheesh..I couldn't even feed my kids off of $50K.

People don't say thanks to you enough, I think, so...

Thanks W1zz!!!
