Still the weakest of the two, without the new "bragging rights" DX11.

vs a 5850, the 4890 will get it's arse handed to it
Save up for a 5850, or go with two 5770s in CrossFire if your motherboard is capable as that'll be cheaper and faster than a 5850. One 5770 isn't quite as fast as a 4890 in the upper resolutions, but the power consumption I feel offsets that, since the 5770 only draws like 70W on average during load! ![]() Unless you can get the 4890 for $100 or less, I personally don't find the attraction to getting one right now with the current offerings from AMD. |

4890 is running on older technology. And it can only do DirectX 10.1
5850 and 5770 run on the latest tech and have much better specs. They can do DirectX 11. Also they are built on the 40nm manufacturing process which mean they will run at cooler temps. And that will give you better overclocking results which means more performance!

OK. Explain this. I see it a lot and I always feel that those who say it not even understand what they are saying with that or what's so wrong with the "old tech" that is so good on the new one. How exactly is the HD4890 running on older tech and what are exactly the benefits of the so called new tech?
I mean you mention DX11 which I agree with. You mention 40nm which I don't agree so much, being that is not a good process at all (evergreen is good despite 40nm, not because of it), but the thing is that you also mention "new tech" and I wonder what that new tech is, because you mention DX11, 40nm and "new tech" separately. I don't know where... I was providing my own personal opinion, that I wouldn't get a 4890 over a 5850/5770 unless you could get the 4890 for $100 or less. I was NOT saying I can get one OR know where to!
![]() And btarunr, I was only grouping you into that because you were responding to F430. And just so you would see why he mentioned it, because it was in response to me.

Main benefits of the 5770 would be lower idle power consumption, eyefinity, and the small subset of features that are in DX11 but not 10.1.
Note that you will still be able to run DirectX11 games, in DirectX11, even on 10.1 hardware. This represents a departure from how the tech worked before where, for example, if you had a DX9 card you would not be able to play a DX10-only game at all. DX11 contains downlevel paths so that it will operate directly on 10.1, 10, and 9 hardware. DX11 is a strict superset of DX10.1 and 10.1 already contains the vast majority of what is in DX11. When you are running a DX11 game on 10.1 hardware you are only really missing out on tesselation and Shader Model 5.0 (as opposed to 4.1). Of course the REAL deal right now, IMO, is used 4870x2s. You are talking about 5870 performance for $200usd, nothing can match that or even come close. |

I think while the 4870s do a bit better at higher resolutions, the 5770s comparatively do better at say 1680x with AA enabled...

Than 2 5770s? Yea it'd probably be a close match, but from all the reviews I've seen the 2x 5770s are nigh 5870 performance. So unless you manage to get a 5850 that does 1000Mhz (needs a BIOS capable of that I think), you might still be short of their performance. Also keep in mind the price. If you WANTED to go Powercolor, $250 nets you 2x 5770s. Last time I checked (weeks ago) the 5850s were $290-$340...

I dont know what planet you guys are on but a 4890 is still 15% faster than a 5770 @ stock clocks and has a lot more overclocking headroom than the 5770 due to the 5770's weak 128-bit membus bottlenecking performance
for $100 I would jump on that 4890 OP, great deal |

4890 is slightly better than 5770, but if you OC both of them, they are more or less equal. (The 4890 is not known as a champ overclocker). Seeing that the cheapest 5770 can be found within the $140 range, I would say its not bad to quite good depending on how much you care about DX11.

Ran a quick search on Google, it came up with quite a lot around 1000Mhz overclock, few slightly over and many under, and since stock is 850Mhz, I would have to retract my comments about it being a crappy overclocker. However, many 4890 flavours come with 900+Mhz oc out of the box, so that might have clouded my judgement.

I can get 1050mhz on stock volts easily with both of my 4890's and with voltage tweak software (I'm on water) 1200mhz is doable.
Wiz's review of a stock OCed 5770 (MSI) showed that card being 15% behind an 850 mhz 4890 |

My two cents, I've used both a 5770 and a 4890 and if I had to choose, I'd take the 4890 (non reference) of course.

OMFG SERIOUSLY PEOPLE YOU ARE KILLING ME!!!!
![]() THE ONLY REASON $100 WAS MENTION IS BECAUSE I WAS EXPRESSING MY OPINION. I WILL NOW SPELL IT OUT FURTHER. IF I HAD THE CHOICE OF A 4890 @ $100 OR A 5770, I WOULD PICK THE 4890, HOWEVER; IN THE US THE 4890 IS TYPICALLY $210+ SO I WOULD RATHER BUY A 5770 @ $150 AND BUY A NEW HDD WITH THE $60 SAVED. Everyone on the same page now? No where was it said that the OP can get the card for $100, unless after currency conversion, the site he linked to offers it for that. I doubt it is though, and I'm not going to even bother checking... I swear people only glance over threads before the reply
Last edited by Formula350; Apr 27, 2010 at 10:37 PM. Reason: Black Panther: Red size 7 Caps waste too much monitor space. OP Edit: So does ppl saying get it for $100 when he can't! :P |

snippe dog sceenshots or it didnt happen. my 4890's are considered exceptional, and they need +/- 1.4 for 1ghz and thats bench stable and game stable for a little while. stock volts seems a bit questionable to me unless yours are cherry picked of course. just a little food for thought here.

I wish it was photoshopped! wish lower volts were possible well they are possible just not stable is all. These 4890s are suck though and kick any game/benches ass
