Safe Bios settings for overclocking?
I currently am overclocked to 3.8. I have gotten it to 4.0 reasonabley stable but i know there is some setting that i'm missing. I did it with 1.5 vlts and temps were good i am thinking it's something to do with NB voltage or something else i'm completely missing. help is appreciated. here is what i have set up now but i want to get to 4.0 stable. My chip HATES the mult dropped and fsb upped. Fsb doesn't like to be played with at all!
cpu ratio x19 fsb 200 pcie freq 108 dram freq 1600 cpu/nb 2400 ht link 2400 cpu vlt auto cpu/nb vlt auto cpu vdda vlt auto dram vlt 1.64 ht vlt auto nb vlt auto nb 1.8v vlt auto sb vlt auto Last edited by garyinhere; May 18, 2010 at 10:07 PM. |

Dunno about fancier gpu's but I have always set pci-e at 100

Oh well, if it isn't doing any harm.
I just stuck with the advice back in nforce 3 to lock pci-e to 100, cos boards used to ramp it up along with the HTT/FSB.

Find out the stock volta and then enter them manually.
If you board overvolts then you may be able to lower them. Many boards overvolt and auto errs on the overvolting side in my experience. edit.....my only Asus board overvolts.

Overclock each component individually first. i.e. Lower your ram below stock and crank on your CPU, Multi and voltage only. Once you start getting errors, bump the NB voltage and see if it stabalizes, once you get it stable, then bump the NB/HTT frequencies and repeat for stablilty, give a little more voltage when it gets stable. Once that is done, tune the FSB to fine tune it 1-2mhz at a time.
Remember to keep an eye on your temps with each voltage increase. Then run memtest with your CPU at STOCK, increasing frequency/timings, between runs. Then work out the best settings running all the components overclocked. This is very time consuming, but isn't that what makes it fun? ![]() Also, I have also learned that running the PCIE over 103 leads to instability. Good Luck

I admit it is a little over a year old, but the architecture remains the same. It is a pretty thorough guide to get the basics. And that is all you can really ask for. Any advanced OC is just a matter of trial and error. Tweak then test then tweak and retest. That is the simplest solution. I will say that overclocking is an art form. The highest clock on the CPU is not necessarily the best. It is a balancing act between all of the components acting in unison. Good Luck.

been working at it patiently for about 3 months... i'll be stable at 4.0 one day and then it'll crap out. I just didn't mess with nb volts or anything like that. I though that maybe a tweak somewhere like that is all i needed?

NB voltage and frequency as well as HT voltage and frequency are important to stabilizing that clock. Are you having Vdroop issues? The Asus board is notorious for it. Use HWMonitor to verify your voltage and make sure it is stable.
When you say it will be stable at 4Ghz then crap out, how do you define stable? I personally prefer OCCT for stability testing. If you can pull off about 2-4hours of OCCT, then it is stable.
