Need help on a new rig

Title has it, been outta the scene for a while getting some things in order so Im not to sure where all the new things fall into play.

All I have so Far is:

CM Storm Sniper
Liteon DVD/CD Burner
Asus 22' 2ms GTG Full HD LCD
Samsung F3 1 TB (Thanks Fourstaff) SHOULD I GO SATA3 THOUGH?
XFX Black Edition 750w (Thanks everyone!)
ASUS 5850 (? Need more opinions!)
Gigabyte UD3R (Thanks Fourstaff)
i7 930 (I got talked into it after seeing reviews and comparisons)
Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme (Thanks Fourstaff)
G.Skill PI Series 3x2GB C7 DDR3 1600

Anyone have an opinion on it?

Please give me insight on the rest, money isnt really an issue but lets not get crazy I dont need a 2k$ rig on my hands. Mainly going to be used to play alot of the newer games coming out, as well as a family computer, need a good amount of space as the wife likes to take pictures, and I love to overclock

Thanks,
Wasted

The XFX 750W PSU is a fantastic PSU and I can not fault it, but its a bit overpriced for what it is, look at some Corsair, Thermaltake and Antec PSUs in the <$70 range. You've got 2k you only need about half of this budget to put together a ultra high end computer.

As far as the other components you have to decide whether you are going the AMD or Intel route. Intel has the i7 920 as top tier whilst AMD have the Phenom X6 1055T/1090T. In gaming they are about equivalent, in Encoding, rendering and general work related stuff the X6 is a fair bit faster.

Read around for some review, starting with the TPU review:

Arrrgh, I am so tempted to recommend the i7 980X

Righto, Here's my opinion:

i7 930/920 cooled by Xigmatek Dark knight/Noctua NH-D14/TRUE?H50/Tuniq Tower/ Mega/Frio/ toomanyheatskinkswhicharegood! :
Gigabyte X58 UD3R
Some nice 3x2GB ram (CAS7 and 1600Mhz)
2 Samsung 1TB F3's for wife + 640Gb WD Caviar Black for your games
5870 any flavour
Corsair TX750w PSU

Did I miss anything?

Edit: the XFX power supply is good.
You just missed HammerON's awesome i7 sale by the way D;

Appreciate the info so far everyone, im liking the i7 920, but ive been an AMD fan boy since the Athlon XP days so this is gonna be a tough one. Is the Gigabyte mobo a solid choice havent heard much about them in a while.

Was lookin at this card: ASUS ROG MATRIX 5870 P/2DIS/2GD5 Radeon HD 5870 Pl...
Anyone had a first hand experience with this, does it run cool?

Keep the opinions coming please

Looked at the i7 980x and my wallet started to hurt, lets not be wild , also can I get some more memory recommendations I was looking at some G.SKill Pi Series as that is what I had used in the past and loved em.

Also looking at the Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme Universal CPU Cooler 120mm... will it block any ram slots though as I plan on using 3 (3x2GB)?

I have been using Gigabyte (high-end ones) for years now and love them to death. Rock solid and a very well designed BIOS. I would also do the X58A-UD3R Mobo with a Core i7 930. I also agree that the XFX is a nice PS, but the corsair ones are just as nice and save you a little cash. I just used the Pi series from G.Skill and love those too so the saved cash can be spent on those, they run great clock speed at low timings and only need 1.5 volts. If you live near a microcenter you can get a Core i7 930 for 199.99. At that price it was an easy choice.

Now if I were to go with a Core i5, because unfortunately I dont have a microcenter remotely close, what would the best mobo choice be? Because again I dont need a mega computer here, just something to play some of the newer MMO's/Starcraft 2/FPS's

If going Intel it's very hard not to recommend waiting a couple weeks for the new unlocked processors. The 875 looks to be an excellent choice.

Take jelly up on it. A few years from now you'll be glad you went X58 in my opinion. Especially at that price.

P55A UD(whatever fits your budget at 3 or above) To be blunt, even though I own two of these setups...price vs. performance says i7/1366 is the way to go with intel. The pricing is to close now not to.

I just got an OCZ StealthXStream 600W from newegg...
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/artic...y-Review/451/2

Reviews seemed okay. The only thing that gets me at the moment is that it uses "Okay" capacitors from CapXon... you could get an Antec NEO ECO which I originally was going to get. Seems like a decent PSU

My rule in hardware purchase: Don't care about the ability to upgrade. If you go 1366, you can still up yourself to 980X. If you go AM3, chances are, you might be able to get Bulldozer. If you get a 1166, everyone will shout you down

The OCZ is quite a good buy, but I wouldn't bet an i7 chip on it. Better get a 750w PSU to run 2x5870 rather than upgrade it again.

Yeah because they wanted to cut costs the downside is that there isn't a lot of connectors as there should be. There are only 2 PCIE connectors (which I don't think will run a pair of 5870s) and 2 connectors for the CPU. along with 3 SATA connectors cables are also reportedly short so wouldn't use them in a full atx case. It's fine for me but may not be suited for you just thought you might be interested...

Does the i7 really need that much power though?? :-S

I appreciate it, but was looking at staying on the egg more or less, nothing against you its just what works for me.

I unserstand what you mean but I feel an i5 will last me a year or two and then Ill more then likely just pick up all new components, which from what it seems the sockets will have changed anyway. I realize I stated money isnt to much of an issue but I didnt wanna get super wild or the wifey will probably lock me in the basement heh.

I was looking at this one GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD4P LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/... cant really justify the UD6 or 7, and from what I understand in order to maintain full x16 capability on my g-card I have to disable to USB 3.0 and SATA3 so they run at normal speeds?(USB 2 and SATA 2)

On a side note dropped the monitor down to a 22'' after much deliberation and measuring of my current desk, and decided to go with the XFX PSU as I prefer a modular solution and all internet reviews have been great on it not to mention the XFX customer support! The ASUS 5850 seems to be my current choice of card as well, as it beats out the 465 and uses less power as well as budgetly rounded. (If budgetly is a word).

So are you going to get a Phenom II X6? I was debating on the whole i5 or II X6 as well. I think for the value, nothing beats two more chips and as apps get better at multithreading it should really be able to stand out and shine.

Be careful with the i5, they cost about $40-50 more than the Phenom II X4 955, the Phenom II X4 955 is cheaper and a fair bit faster. The Phenom X6 1055T (hexacore) is about the same price as the average i5 and would eat it for breakfast. I'm not trying to put you off but its important you read the reviews before you invest any money. If you are begging for Intel get the i7 otherwise the Phenom II is what you want.

Some of the lower model i5's are slower than the <$100 Athlon II X4 series.
