GTX 460 SLI or GTX 480?

What does TPU think?

What are the pros and cons or each setup?

If I were planning to build a completely new system right now which would you recommend?

Discuss.

I have yet to read the reviews on the GTX 460's.(which i recommend you do), but im hearing good things. I think an SLI setup with those card would be great.

What you could do though as another option is pick up the GTX 480, and then later on down the line pick up another for some fantastic performance.

If you know you won't have the funds to pick up another 480, then i think going with two 460's is a great pick. Read up on some reviews on the SLI performance/scaling of the cards and see if it's something you would what to get in on.

Hahaha ... I was expecting a thread of this sort to pop up after the 460 launch ...

Anyways ... Yes the SLI 460s are faster than a single 480 (around 10%) ... it scales well at high res (80%+) ... costs $150 less than a single 480 ... power draw difference is negligible ... runs a little cooler ... so many pros ...

Someone pls come up with some cons ...

take two msi cyclone 1024mb put them in sli, do some overclocking maybe some ~850/900 with a small overvolt and you have one baddass system, lower noise and power consumption

GTX 460 SLI.

Advantages:
Almost close to a 5970.
Not very expensive.

Disadvantages:
No room to upgrade further (Only 2-way SLi supported)

Though 2x 460s should be more than enough

Neither.

Wait and see what happens. Nvidia can now poke around a bit with the GF104 architecture. The GTX460 still has a disabled cluster and might be able to be remedied. Although people use sli as a negative (due to lack of support) there are very few games that dont support crossfire or sli and if they dont, they're probably not biggies as the latest and greatest need the support for optimum marketing.

There's a chance that ATI release a hyped up hybrid in the next few months and i'm pretty sure NV has got something up it's sleeve to counter it (Southern or Northern Islands - can't remember which is the 40nm one and which will be on 28nm later next year- for ATI) and like i said, a full fat GF104.

However, if you must buy now - absolutely sli GTX 460. Overclock well, quiet and power friendly (as such). One GTX 480 is outdone and GTX 480 sli is just as wankish as buying a 4GB 5890.

Wonder if manufacturers will ever release a version with triple-SLI enabled. Also waiting to see the "full GF104" with all clusters enabled.

Wha? 2 GTX 460s cost $460 ($230 each) and a GTX 480 also costs $460.

@erocker:

This is purely hypothetical at this point... but I'm thinking about building something completely new.

But this thread was really just to discuss the two setups.

a 480 is more e-peen since you can add another, but as a customer i would get dual 460s. But since I plan on quading a 480 so no. Actually kidding about quading the 480

Yeah the Sapphire. I was thinking about the 480s as well. I'm hoping to see a GTX485 in the near future.

EDIT: I'm trying to get a card that has more than 1GB VRAM. So its either the ARES, a 5970 4GB or a set of 1.5GB GTX 480.

Id say go with a single GTX 480 then SLI later on. I had so many problems with SLI when I had my two GTX 285's not all games would support it and it would make my games crash.
