MSI GTX 465 Twin Frozr Golden Edition

Call me crazy - I'm sure it appears that way to most. I actually popped for a GTX 465 today. I saw a card that struck my fancy and its not even cheap for one:

MSI N465GTX Twin Frozr II GE GeForce GTX 465 (Ferm...

TPU has a such a nice review on its aluminum clad sibling and there was just something compelling about a solid copper HSF. From everything I can gather it sits between a GTX 460 768MB and a GTX 460 1GB in performance and I can live with that. Its also darn cool for a Fermi and the quietest card the W1zard had reviewed in a long time (and I like quiet). I saw this video on the MSI GTX 465 Twin Frozr Golden Edition and it looked interesting. I "may" try to unlock it if there are indeed 10 RAM chips (I'll make sure first):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmF0yQfn_Og

I haven't flashed a BIOS since unlocking my X850 Pro Vivo to an XT. Might be fun, might be heartbreaking. And yes, I know its more power hungry than a GTX 460 or HD 5850, but I can afford a few more watts while I'm gaming. At idle it won't matter much. So go ahead, rip me a new one for being such a fool. I'm still pretty excited about it and will keep you all posted on my unlocking adventure (if I get the nerve).

The only problem with that card is it is extremely heavy...

But it definitely looks totally bad ass, I wish they would release more coolers that looked like this.

That is the only GTX 465 I would consider buying. That cooler is my fav, I want the 470 FROZR (non copper)

I may very well just use Afterburner and OC it instead of trying to flash it. I would hate to brick it (although I would make a backup of the original BIOS). It won't be here until Monday so I'll have time to mull it over! Oh, and I wasn't expecting all the encouraging responses in light of the GTX 460's availability. I know its the more logical choice, but sometimes its fun to do something different from the obvious.

Still a good card imo. You gets to still keep a larger L2 Cache, and a few more Shader procs than the 460. Would show well for GPU intensive games.

Looks like the guy who made the Youtube video works for NCIX in Canada. He's selling flashed ones on their website! Makes me feel pretty confident this GTX 465 - GTX 470 will work:

http://forums.ncix.com/forums/index....d=0#msg2221076

Just going to need to take my time and research before trying it.

Whenever you decide to get rid of the card, keep the heatsink! Or, I'll just buy it off of you. Beautiful looking card, I hope it becomes a 470 for you.

Yeah, I've been super tempted to pick this card up to try and flash to a GTX470...

I did. I know, I'm shallow.

Overclock.net has an official thread on the card. First guy to get one there got it to unlock to GTX 470.

I can tell you right now, the one in the Newegg pictures is unlockable, you can tell just by looking at the back of the PCB.

How? I just bought one off of Newegg, it'd be great to be able to tell w/o having to pop the cooler off.

If you look where the missing memory chips are supposed to be, if the chips are there, then the little resistors will be there on the back of the PCB. If there are no memory chips, then the resistors on the back of the PCB will be missing also. The one in the newegg pictures has the resisters in tact, so I can almost gurantee the memory chips are there and the card can be unlocked. Of course who knows if all of the Golden Edition cards are the same...

The price is right for that card. I like the cooling of copper, but the look of the silver better. Of course if it unlocks I can look past the copper. Keep us updated

Looking at the tally on the Overclock.net official thread they've got three for three unlocked! Damn, I can't wait for Monday! Thing is, I just bought a new house and get the keys tomorrow. I don't know how much time I'll have to try it when I get the card (going to try to paint the entire inside of the house before I move in). Kind of a hectic month ahead.

Newegg just jacked up the price to $309 from $259 and no free shipping. They must have noticed the sudden demand.

That's more than an actual 470 costs on there. Newegg better be flashing these themselves for that kind of price.
