Icy Dock Intros Space-Maximizing 1x 5.25'' to 4x 2.5'' Bay Enclosure
Icy Dock released a handy enclosure that makes room for four 2.5" SATA or SAS HDDs/SSDs inside a 5.25" drive bay. The Icy Dock MB994SP-4S enclosure provides the four 2.5" bays with doors and trays that make loading and unloading the drives inside easy. Internally, the enclosure relays four SATA or SAS connections to the ports at the back (from which they can be individually connected to the system's storage controller, while power is drawn in from two Molex connectors. Each tray has its own drive activity indicator. Cooling is care of two 40 mm fans on its rear side. Measuring 6.7" x 5.75 x 1.63", the enclosure is the size of most 5.25" optical drives, and is designed to fit in almost every case with a 5.25" bay. Icy Dock did not give out pricing or availability details yet.

while you may be 'herp derp, modern PSU's all have sata!' - not everyone has a modern PSU, this could find many homes in older servers and NAS systems.

That's pretty awesome really, fill a system with a few of them and you'd have a winner.

There's a fair number of products along these lines, been using them in builds for quite a while now (relevant Google product search). I have also found 5x 3.5" in 3x 5.25" enclosures to be handy for packed builds (example.

If you mean the popcornhour C-200, this unti does not drive combining, so you still only have 2 SATA ports inside the C-200, so 2 of the bays are wasted (unless you just use them to store unused drives to swap back and forth).
Currently you would still only get 2TB which is less than 1 x 3.5" in the included bay + whatever you have on an internal 2.5". I did see some similar units that did drive combining somewhere but can't find them now. A small "drive combining, hot swap" board might be a winner for folks that want max storage rather than speed. |
