new system questions

Hi Guys, I got a 15yr old here that is being home schooled and wants a computer to run his Adobe CS4 software, I was thinking about an i3 system with 4gigs of ram, 1TB HDD but not sure about a decent video card ATI or NVidia any suggestions ??? His parents want to keep it around $800 Thx Scott

at the general consumer level, do you have such options?

Quite a few Photoshoppers on this site really rave about the AMD 1055T chip.

If I am not mistaken, CS4 supports CUDA, so an Nvidia card would be the way to go.

nVidia is the only way if u need GPU acceleration ... heres what i suggest ... it may be a bit overkill if he just wants to do photo editing ...

Build 1 - Intel but without monitor ($773 - $30 MIR = $742)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Build 2 - AMD with monitor ($844 - $50MIR = $794)

The i3 5xx series is equivalent to a Q6xxx series
The i5 6xx and 7xx is a bit faster than the Q9xxx series.
The i5 8xx and i7 xxx would be much faster than the Q9xxx series.

I really see no point investing in socket 775, its been dead for a while and your upgrade paths are limited.

PS. The above recommended components are good but unless you are gaming the GTX460 is not necessary, photoshop is fine using onboard video, if you want to use Cuda specifically the GTS 250 is like $100.

AFW's rig is more like a gaming rig...plenty fast enough for photoshop and it can rip apart games too, make sure the 15yr gets his Crysis on when he isnt being schooled from home.

Check out TIGR Custom, if you're anywhere close to him it'd be worth getting his advice/getting him to build it. TIGR's a meber here, he's built professional A/V editing PC's for businesses, etc.
Here's some reviews on his services, impressive stuff.
