Microsoft raising Xbox Live Price

As of November 1, users of Xbox Live Gold will be paying more for the online service. The price of Gold in the U.S. is going from $7.99 a month to $9.99 a month. Three-month buys will go from $19.99 to $24.99, and if you buy your Xbox Live by the year, you'll be paying $59.99 instead of $49.99 annually.

As more people move over the the(almost)free system(PS3) to play online. MS is now starting to see a loss in profits......

Just a theory.

i think its just a money grab by Microsoft, they figure they have some 20 million xbl subscribers...an extra $10 from each will look nice on financial reports

They figure since raising the prices on games from $50 to $60 didn't lead to a huge decrease in sales, people will pay the same for XBL.

I don't have a 360 anymore, but I for one would like to see that extra $10 a year really go towards some more improvements. I think it would be a lot better for Microsoft to say, "We're raising the price by $10 per year, but along with it will come these added features and improvements: ...."

Yeah, that is my theory too.

I kind of find it funny that they say they will continue to offer the best value in the industry, yet every other competing platform gives away the same service as Xbox Live Gold for free. How is charging $60 a year, or even $50 a year, the best value in the industry? Seems to me the word they are looking for is worst, not best.

I cancelled my Live account this morning when I read this. Not so much because of the price increase, but because I haven't turned my Xbox on in 6 months.

From what I have read, your ISP still needs to be on the affiliate list to get ESPN. If your ISP is on the list I would just use the service at no additional cost on a PC.

As far as the service, ESPN3 has actually come a long way since it was ESPN360. I use the service on my PC when there are international games not played on cable. It sucked when I was watching the FIBA Americas tournament a couple years back, but did well a couple days ago during the FIBA USA Croatia game a couple days ago. Night and day difference.

I don't have a 360, or any current generation consoles for that matter, but I do know a little something about deals.

Most of my friend's with 360s have been able to pick up year subscriptions to gold for $20-$25 a year. It's just a matter of keeping a good lookout.

So, the user does not have to pay netflix another 10 dollars to be apart of the program?

Just wondering. I can do ESPN, Facebook, and Tweitter for FREE on the PS3, and pay 10 dollars for Netfilx if I want it. Not 60 dollars a year just to be able to pay 10 more dollars for the service.

Never heard of the other two so I don't know.

Well MS has always gotten people to pay for it, and so it would be dumb to give it away for free now.....

Besides those, Xbox Live is just generally a better online service. And this is coming from someone who owns a PS3.

Xbox Live is a much more finely tuned service as opposed to the PlayStation Network(which still feels like it's in Beta), now personally, i think it's BS to charge more for Live.. and i do think it should be free. But it's Microsoft's rules and it has already been proven that millions upon millions of people enjoy using Live. So if people really want it.. then they'll pay the money.
