GTX 460 2GB SLI vs. GTX 480

A few interesting results. Not huge overclocks either.

Hmmm, I'm beginning to feel more strongly about these GTX 460's.

You and me both. Perhaps I should have kicked down $50 more for the SLI board after all.

even a single GTX 460 1gb can be as fast as a gtx 480 with proper overclocking.

I would find it very hard to beleive that an overclocked 460 could get anywhere near an overclocked 480, it cannot even better an overclocked 5850 across the board, unless of course you are talking about an overclocked 460 versus STOCK opposition which is hardly fair as anyone willing to overclock the 460 would also overclock the 480 if they owned it.

The great strength of these 460's is their SLi scaling IMO but to fully appreciate it you need to be running at least a res of 1920 as even at that res you are only only getting 72% of the 2nd card which is an immediate toilet flush of 28% of the price but thats a damn site better than many previous offerings.

Tatty_One: no. LOL. there are many benchmarks showing various overclocks which can best a 5850 and even a 470.

also the overclocked 5850. a GTX 460 1gb is a great card and especially shines when its overclocked.

I believe that a highly overclocked 460 can best a gtx 480.

besting a 5850 or even a 470 is very easy if u overclock the 460 . trust me.

if u can overclock the 460 to 900mhz core, it is faster than any 5850 and will match the 470 if not faster.

im going to buy a MSI 460 tomarrow and report back.

So you are talking about an overclocked 460 versus stock then, unless of course you can show me reviews/results of an overclocked 460 at say 900mhz core as you quoted, versus a 470 with a max overclock or a 5850 at 1000mhz + core, I bench my 5850 at 1035mhz, I genuinly would be interested to see a 460 at 900mhz beating that because if you can show me....... I might just UPGRADE to a GTX460

actually comparing an overclocked mid range card to an overclocked high end card isnt fair.

yes i compare a stock 470 or 5850 to an overclocked gtx 460, otherwise its obvious the higher end cards will be faster anyway .

tomarrow i will buy my MSI 460 GTX and i will overclock it to the point of seizure and will show u whose card is better. i am sure my one will be MUCH faster than your one. i mean it.

Thank you for confirming that, it is you that compared the 460 to the 470 and 5850 not me however in your origional post, so now you are saying that your comparison was against stock 470's and 5850's but then you go on to say you are buying a 460 and you still think it will beat a hugely overclocked 470 or 5850?

Please don't get me wrong here, I am not a fanboi, I love the look of the GTX 460, especially the SLi performance, however for the sake of accuracy, I don't like throw away comments about any cards performance without facts, it can mislead members. I would be delighted if your 460 overclocked beats my 5850 at 1035mhz, that really would show the "bang for buck" of the 460.... please do post some benches when you get the card.

SLi scaling is just wonderfull with these cards, the review shows that two stock cards achieve 1.97x the performance of one stock card... thats as good as anyone can hope for. naturally its over 2x the performance of a stock card when the SLi combo are overclocked.

@ Mavvs I would have an easy time believing that GTX460's overclocked could beat two 5850's both overclocked, because of the efficiency of SLi scaling over CFX scaling, but in terms of single card, a 460 would have a hard time. 5850's are overclocking beasts.

460 is also an overclocking beast.

460 is better in most games. Nvidia drivers are much better and games like to support nvidia based cards.

also DX11 is where 460 shines and best the 5850 .

Enough talk....bring on these magical benches.

Because like most......I'm hard pressed to buy that the 460 at high clocks would beat the 470 or the 5850....let alone your original comment of beating the 480.

Don't forget to add in the added expense of whatever cooling system your going to use to cool this 460 beast with.

If I remember correctly, SLI 460s OC'ed was close to or beating SLI 480s stock. I haven't been keeping up lately, so damn if I know any know.

Not talking about SLI vs SLI...Mavvs is saying the 460 with a monster overclock will beat the 470/480 and the 5850.......In single card duals....he needs to provide some benchmarks to back it up.

On topic though....the 460's in SLI are very impressive indeed.

No there are really not that many... a 460 at like 900 core can beat a STOCK 470 in like 3 out of 25 tests... find me one test that an OC'd 460 can even touch a stock 480. You can't because it cant - its not even close.

I can modify my hardware to be faster than whatever i want.

I am a hardware designer and engineer. I can modify a GPU to have as many shader processors as i want, texture units, ROPS, etc.

i have my own lab at my home .

So if I send you an 8800GTS, could you modify it to have 129 shaders? Adding one shader should be easy since you can modify a GPU to have as many shaders as you want.

yes, maybe.

last time I made my GTS 250 to have 500 shader processors. but it died.

now when i get my GTX 460, i plan to add 1 milion shader processors, 5 milion texture units and 10000 ROPS .

it will be a real best.

Lol, go wave your magic wand then please and post me a GPU-Z screenie with your 460 having MORE ROP's, TMU's and SP's than a GTX 480 please.

Then once you have done that, go play in another thread and stop derailling this one with the biggest load of Bulls**t I have heard since my youngest daughter tried to convince me that she needed a 50 inch widescreen TV for university because her eyesight was poor.
