I think its the other way around, it sounds like they disabled a burner to make it into a ROM drive?

These could be "defective" burners. Misalignment of write head or other problems. Try flashing the ROMs for sure! But test the write by reading on another CD-drive before doing any critical backups!

I remember in the good old days I had one of the "first" cd-burners... 650MB... SCSI. Problem was that she liked her own burns, but other CD drives didnt like her CDs at all. So be careful.

Its like when they are selling lower end video cards like hotcakes and they take a top of the line card and downgrade it for the cards that are selling like hot cakes.

They have done this with CPUs in the past as well.

Your first CD burner was also before the "book" standards were followed aswell....

my 4x scsi burner still works fine, u just gotta run a calabration on it every few months if ur not burning much or burning a whole lot.
