I dunno if this was already discussed here but I found this randomly browsing the net:

Basically rumors have begun circulating that Ati will do some re-badging and renaming and mix the hd5000 and 6000 cards together. It's probably just a rumor but i hope it's fake. I'd like to see some op to bottom updates with a reasonable increase in performance.

I looked at that but it didn't make sense to me, so I payed it no mind.
They're renaming 5770 to 6770 and 6770 to 6870? Why would they call it a 6770 in the first place if they were just going to rename it to 6870? If a 6770 was already official, then they renamed, it'd make sense, but this... not at all.
IMO, if they were renaming, it'd be 5770 to 6770 and that's it, the rest would have been given their respective names to begin with, not adjusted as that table is stating.

Another inconsistency is having the 5770 and 6770 being exactly the same, ie, x770; wouldn't they at least make it 5830 to 6770 or 5850 to 6770? It doesn't make sense that they would make exact the same card aimed at the same people/market.
To top it all off, they just introduced the x9xx branding for the dual GPU cards in the 5xxx series, now they just dump it when it worked so well in the very next series?
FUD IMHO.

i came across this maybe of some interest.

The Inquirer reports that the new Catalyst 10.8 drivers show some new GPU codes.

Buried amongst the drivers are some codenames of graphics cards that might be released someday. These include "223, CAYMAN GL XT (6700), NI CAYMAN 224, CAYMAN GL XT (6701), NI CAYMAN 225 ,CAYMAN GL XT (6702), NI CAYMAN 226, CAYMAN GL XT (6703), NI CAYMAN 227, CAYMAN GL PRO (6704)" and shedloads of others.

No reason for ATI to do this re-branding. Interesting how this chart shows the HD 6870 & a HD 6970

All I am interested in is the fact the HD 6800 series is going to have MORE Northern Island parts than Evergreen

HP offers PCs with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6370

These are the models i foun d so far:

Here are the magic numbers for .inf modding or detection in GPU tools:

Those are not 6 series parts. They are 5 series relabeled because of the Manhattan tag.

Which one? Do you mean the HD 6870, HD 6970 or the HD 6990

Even the HD 6770 should easily outperform the current HD 5870 big time and should cost a lot cheaper which brings me to believe the current Evergreen cards are going to get slashed big time.

In regards to re-branding, NVIDIA seems to be the king of re-branding. They’ve always tried fooling the masses but end up kicking themselves in the aris.

Though it’s strange that ATI/AMD “IF TRUE” chose to re-brand cards that are not even yet released.

I like the way HD 6970 sounds, we all know it’s a Dual-GPU card. And why on earth would they split up the original HD 6870 and call it the HD 6970 then make the original HD 6770 into the HD 6870.

I will tell you why IMO “IF TRUE” they’ve done this silly move. ATI didn’t really expect these new cards to perform as good as originally thought.

Obviously by ATI re-naming the HD 6770 into the HD 6870, I suspect the original HD 6770 performs like a MONSTER, enough to slaughter the original HD 5870 by a large margin.

Well, why didn’t ATI/AMD just leave it this way? That would have been a kick in the teeth for NVIDIA and make competition all that more interesting as a whole.

If there’s any truth to this re-branding, I would advise ATI/AMD to retract it ASAP and stick to the original naming scheme which we are familiar with.

I don't know if anyone has covered this. But my worries are as follows.

Let us say that this is a full architecture change over like some people have speculated. And that now that naming scheme will go as follows...
6970=6990
6870=6970
6850=6950
6770=6870
6750=6850
And so on.....

So we have seen pre-released benches from the 68XX class supposedly the 6870. (Which would be the new name for the 6770) They read out at a P Score or 24K. That would put it at the 5970 range.

If this is all true....then wouldn't that card probably release @ around the same price point as the 5870 is now now? Meaning the new 6770 will be around $400 to $500 dollars. Which would mean that ATI will be going the old Nvidia route and probably be price gouging when they first release.

That also means good news that the 6970(6870) might have a P Score of who nows 28K or higher... but what would it be priced at then?.....$700 Dollars. My Point is... with no competition from Nvidia and no competition from ATI/AMD themselves.... these cards could turn out to be insanely expensive!
So the Price point of a 6990 could easily be over a grand! My point is that ATI if they are not smart could easily price themselves out of the ball park. If all we have been talking about is true!
My Hope is they don't do that.

But if the name changing is true and you look at it from a business prospective... releasing the 6870(6770) first might be a good idea.
First you sell that card (6770)6870 at the price point of the 5870 before Christmas. Make a huge % on profit... then release your top dog. The 6970(6870) Sell this card @ a price point of the 5870 or a little higher $500 to $600 and then drop the 6870(6770) back down to were it should be... $350 to $250 range.

It would piss a lot of people off.... But I could easily see a company do it.

Just a thought... could anyone else see this bad news happening?

Think about it.... this generation a 5770 was about as powerful as the 4870. So If the next generation follows that.... the 6770(6870) should and could be as powerful as the 5870 or better.

This could be bad.... or it could be nothing. I am just looking at all possibilities.

****An other thought*****
It could be that this is all wrong and ATI/AMD are not changing the names and that is just a rumor. If so that would put everything probably back in to the way it is now with pricing. Or it could be that ATI/AMD didn't switch the name yet in that screen shot that has been floating around on the internet to the (6970 yet)..... But if a 6770(6870) Is as powerful or more powerful then a 5870 and they release it first. What makes everyone think ATI/AMD would release it at a price point of $230 to $200 dollars just to be nice? Why when it could compete against Nvidia's top dog?

Makes some sense, and given that AMD is not exactly a company that runs "in the black", they really do need to make some moves to increase profits.

If the shader design has changed like I think it has, these cards are gonna rock, ignoring the potential for other issues...

Benches concern me though. Something is wonky there, IMHO.

What do you mean Something is wrong with the benches. Do you see something I don't? Seriously... I love hearing other Ideas!

Yes they are going to rock allot. But I am sorry...if the top card or even the 3rd inline card costs $500 dollars each. I am not running to them just yet. I will wait and stick with Nvidia for right now. Because I didn't agree with what Nvidia did when Price gouging nor would I if it was ATI/AMD

They used i7 @ 4.2ghz or so...which means that on AMD-based systems, the scoring will be much lower. the Vantage bench has both gpu and cpu score @ 25k...

I've kinda mentioned the lack of grunt on AMD-based systems with high-end vgas...early scores are done on i7 for a reason.

Like really, why can't AMD release early benches on thier own cpus?

I agree on the pricing thing, and I was going to wait anyway. I've been waiting for CH4E since like February...haven't upgraded since then...had Thuban in it's box since release...I can wait to see how these cards do before buying!

Ahh I see you have a point. So lets' take my theory for example. Let's say that the 6870 is the new 6770 and it is as powerful as the 5870. The real score would be closer to 20K in most instances then 25K.
Still if done like that for a reason... it would probably be done for PR Purposes only. To show it has a higher score. Or maybe it's not real at all. Why use an i7 when you can use a 1090T and get similar scores. You would think ATI benches would use AMD CPU's. Especially done in house.

On an other note.... I am going AMD next gen for my CPU. Waiting for Bulldozer. Don't agree with Intel playing god with their CPU's.

But you know that also might be why it's done on an Intel box. AMD will be release Bulldozer soon.... and they needed something with a little more kick for real world tests ... kind of like what Bulldozer would be.
LOL Now I think I am readin way to much into it LMAO!

I hope bulldozer is a massive increase over nehalem, but it will probably only be a bit faster :/ maybe they will overclock better, though.
