corsair psu just went bang, but what next?

hi guys my corsair hx 650w just went pop and blew the fxxxxng rcd under the stairs problem is it's a few days out of rtb warrantie (it's still under warrantie with corsair) 6 years according to the box so what do i do now ?

now my last hiper 520watt psu lasted over 7 years and cost a damned lot less
so it was no supprise i had to replace that, but this corsair hasn't really seen much stress at all (it was used on my old xp3000 ith a hd 3850 untill recently, when i put it in this new i7 920 build with a 5870 ) now just recently when i switched it on it had been making a loud bang kind of noise without smoke (yes i have got a surge arresting plug) which scared me , but i thought it was just the mains lead,so i tried several different ones but to no avail it still popped when being switched on , now everything works fine (thank god) so besides sending emails what happens next ?

why do i ask?

well this is the first thing i've ever had to send back, and as corsair is based in the usa i'm sort of concerned about shipping costs, i mean how much will it be ?

i'm sort of asking anyone from the uk who has had to send things back to the usa how much they had to pay and what cosairs like for repairs i want to hear the good the bad and the ugly

anyways luckily i had bought this ax 850 watt so i still have a pc

should be fine, just RMA it through corsair, i did mine through OCZ, they were a breeze, gave me a free upgrade

I bet you that if you're nice and speak clearly and politely (contrasting from how you type ) they'll send you a brand new one free. No need to ship the busted up old one back.

well ocz is considered a BAD company, cost me £10 shipping, they payed the return fee (took 1 week after sending it out), nothing else they bumped me up to the 600W version for free i really have no complaints, corsair is the BEST for customer service, so expect good things

How ironic, I had a Hiper that went bad on me and just bought an HX 650. One of the reasons I went for it was the warrantee, everyone else was 5 or 3 yrs, including XFX.

well i'll see what the shop says (might get it sent back for free) annoying thing was i was going to sell this 850 watt and get a 750w instead (still might) but i'll lose out a bit of cash but meh it'll save a bit on the electric bill (was going to do a review of this 850w but i don't have an accurate power meter

@ sasqui i think it still works just somethings blown not sure what, other than theres some crusty stuff that was in the bottom of my case when i took the psu out (looks like heat shrink tubing) and my hiper was ok just got a lot of bsod's with it that were solved by the corsair

I saw someone recommend to someone else (On TPU) to ask Corsair for a "Shipping Label" (you just print it out and stick it onto the box before you ship).
As far as I understand, this stops you having to pay for shipping, but I'm not 100%.

That works for me at work on hardware that goes with in warranty where I work...Also I can usually get the vendor to cross ship as well!

They are? How so? You really should back up those kind of statements. Especially when you then go on to say that you had a smooth RMA with them which included a better part than you originally paid for.

I had the same experience, by the way. In place of my Powerstream 520 that had like a month of original 3 year warranty left they sent me a GameXtream 600W.

Good luck emulator. My Corsair 750W still humming along after almost 3 years hope it keeps going.

dude, you caught me wrong, i meant many people bitch about their customer service and tell us about their bad experiences, i love their stuff and have about of their 4 PSUs in various PCs and will continue purchasing their quality stuff, i was merely breaking it down for the OP, helping him not worry so much as Corsair is deemed the BEST for customer service and tell him that most brands WILL live up to their warranty

In my experience OCZ's customer support is a damn site better than Corsairs! although I appreciate we all have different experiences.

ive never really owned a corsair thats why i cant comment, but for the price it should be smooth, only hassle with OCZ is shipping it to the netherlands

Now this is what i don't get, I had my HX-620 blew up only 3-4months ago and since it has a 5yr warranty on it and it was only 2yrs into the warranty i just took it back to the place where i bought it from and got it replaced. Now over here in Australia by LAW the place where you buy it from must take it back and get it replaced under the warranty of the item in question. Now i see alot of places say we only give a 14day warranty back to base warranty and this is total BS, what you do if you see this (here in AUS) you take it back to them say its still under manufacture warranty and that you want it replaced please, if they say no we only give 14days just say well you will be hearing from the ACCC. (This is when they back down straight away)

One company got busted to try to enforce this 14day warranty BS (MWAVE) and they got in trouble for doing this and had to send out a letter to everyone apologizing for this mistake. Also to clarify what had happened and what they have to do when it comes to warranty claims that are over 14days.

Im not sure how it works over in other countries but i would think it would be almost the same as here ( i could be wrong).

I would personally try taking it back to the place of where you bought it from and demand tthem to get it sent back and replaced under the items manufactures warranty IF they say no that is.

If all goes well you should get a free upgraded PSU, i got a HX-650 in-replace of my old HX-620

In the US, they get whatever return policy they want (usually 30 days) then after that, you have to deal directly with the manufacturer.

Yea i have seen this, and i think that stinks to be honest, but is it the shop that has this 14 or 30day policy? eg newegg, or does it come from the US government? Who has the final say when it comes to this over in the US?

I would say the shop, if the government regulated return policies then retailers would be sued day in and day out. It's the US, we sue for everything. Coffee too hot from McDonalds? Sue. Getting fat eating Big Macs? Sue. Ronald McDonald's ass is too big? Sue.

well guys i rang the shop i bought it from and they said to bring it in and they would send it off but here's the question should i?

why?
well if i take it to the shop it'll cost me a few bucks to get down there (it's a fair distance from where i live) and i'll obviously have to pick it up again when it's fixed

but if i send it through the post i'll have to use insurance to make sure it gets to corsair in one piece so what would you guys do?

Just send it to the Netherlands address and you will be fine.

And on the other comment posted a bit earlier, you wont use more power if you use a higher wattage PSU. Your PSU only draws what it requires to power your components and not more. So if your computer draws 300W, your PSU will draw around 330-350 W from the wall socket, irrespective of its wattage...

well it'll be a free trip down their (parents visiting friends, only thing is i have to go aswell ) but ofcause i then have to pay to go back and collect it so ill have to weigh up the pro's and cons
