AMD Radeon HD 6850 PCB Pictured

Barely a couple of days ahead of its launch, the first picture of the Radeon HD 6850 taken apart made its way to the internet. We were treated to the pictures of the HD 6870 PCB last week. AMD's release-grade reference design PCB is not as long as that of the HD 6870, it keeps up with the black color, and is available as either a premium 8-layer version, or a cost-effective 6-layer one. This particular one makes use of a 4+1+1 phase VRM, a CHIL-made VRM controller that might support software voltage control, power input from a single 6-pin PCI-E power connector, one CrossFire connector, and display connectivity that includes two DVI, one HDMI, and two mini-DisplayPort connectors. From the information available to us from recent reports, the Radeon HD 6850 has 960 stream processors 32 ROPs, 48 TMUs, and a 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface holding 1 GB of memory. Its core is clocked at 775 MHz, and memory at 1000 MHz (4000 MHz GDDR5 effective).

1 6pin, now there's something you haven't seen on mid-range in a long time, makes you wonder how it does with overclocking and real world benchmarks, can't wait to see.

Overclocking wise i really expect it to reach the 5870 speed (900mhz core) due to the slides shown yesterday rating the 6870 at 151w at load, also as far as i know it depends greatly on the power supply as to if you can pull more than the standard 75w from a 6 pin connector so it would not supprise me if with some voltage tweaking and overclocking if the 6850 could draw more than 150w.

I can't wait to see what these can do on friday, also i'm kind of curious if the 6850's vrm's have temperature sensors as it would be nice to see how hot they get with it being a different design to most other recent ati/amd gpu's.

i think this is ati's first rectangular chip
Plus why the hell are the caps in the back? I liked the idea of having them near the exhaust

It looks like they will be on the front of the 6870 but not the 6850, i really hope they are on the front of the 6950/70.

The 48xx and 58xx cards the vrm's were always hotter than the core, the crazy temps of them were why i never ran my 4870 with the stock cooler and even then the core temp never effected my overclocking/overvolting it was always the vrm temp that i had to keep an eye on.

I wouldn't even call this mid range, more like low-upper range. Or high-mid range, or upper-mid range or maybe amana radar range.

Anyway, only 1x 6-pin is impressive.

I think the 6870 will have more overclocking headroom than the 6850 because of power limitations ... cos the 6850 needs 127W and max power possible will be (PCI-e slot + 6-pin) 150W ... while the 6870 requires 151W and is provided 225W (2 x 6-pin + PCI-e) .... but I read that the 6-pin can provide more than 75W if needed ... not sure tho ... just my 2c ...

I'm sure you can pull more through a single 6 pin but it's down to the psu as to how much more you can try and force out of it (i could be wrong though).
But i think your right, the fact that the 6870 is supposed to draw 1w over the limit of a 6 pin with the pci-e supply should mean if it's more power it wants it has the hardware to suck a lot more out of your psu than the 6850 so hopefully with a little overvolting the 6870 should get some nice increases, hopefully hitting 1ghz with ease or more.

So -- is AMD getting rid of four-way crossfire on all mid-range cards, then?

I mean, I guess it's understandable. The amount of people going four-way crossfire with mid-range cards is a bit "small," I bet. ("Small" as in, next to no one.)

Internal 4x cf perhaps? or 4 way bridge?

I guess they might go to a connector more like SLI, but more than likely, I bet they're just getting rid of it. TBH though, there can't have been many people 4-way CFing mid-range cards. I guarantee you, if it still exists, we'll see two xfire tabs on the 6900 series.

Interesting, this card i might end up buying instead of a OC 5670. One question, when is this card coming out?

I see a few thermal pads on some of the vrms, but it looks like the caps would get in the way of any type of cooling.

The launch is this Friday the 22nd, though i doubt many people will be actually able to get one on that exact date. It'll probably take a couple weeks till it actually gets into everyone's hands that wants one.
