X, when its plugged in do any of the status lights come on at all?
Heard this somewhere, it might be worth a shot: Disconnect the power cord, remove the battery, hold power button while plugging in charger and inserting battery. Never tired it and it sounds odd, but what the hell, right?

Check for any looseness in the power input jack on the laptop itself. It is common for temporary shorts to develop at that point because with laptops there is often repeated torque on the jack as people are using their laptops / moving them around / picking them up etc. while they are plugged in. Over a period of time, this torquing on that jack can result in a loose connection between the jack and the motherboard.
One way you can test for this is to plug the power cable into the laptop and move the plug gently from side to side as you are trying to turn on the laptop. You may see some of the lights on the laptop go on and off intermittently. If that is the case, you will know that there is a short in the power jack.
