I don't get where this performance increase is coming from. There already was a one off 512 version of the 480 reviewed, it only performed 5% better and used insanely more power. A small clock bump shouldn't be adding another 20% improvement.

so they reworked the GF100 based on what they learned from the GF104 so this card should use less power but I'm going to hold my breath on this, the GF104 isn't that much faster than the GF100 like most people say it is, more than a solution for lowering the power requirements and increase clock speeds but at the same clock as a similar GF100 part it always loses.

i wanna see how it compares to a GTX480 at the same clock.

Seems to be a re-worked memory contoller and better/more expensive power delivery stuff. 10 - 15% performance gains sounds fairly legit.

GF104 isn't faster, unless you're referring specifically to clock speeds. It's not an enthusiast chipset like GF100. If you had a GTX 480 running at those speeds, you'd have a 46.320 billion/sec texture fill rate vs the 580's 49.4 billion/sec. You'd also have the same pixel fill rate and same memory bandwidth. GTX 580 is just a refresh so not much more powerful, but it is supposed to have fixed some of the thermal design issues with the GTX 480 which turned off lots of customers. If you have a GTX 480 don't bother with this card.

What I hate. Is how dam fast ATI and Nvidia are really moving threw the video cards.

ATI HD 5000 series cards have barly hit the age of 1 year

and Nvidia GTX 400 series cards are still under 10 months sense release.

ATI's HD 5000 series just barly settled in the mind of the not so informed gamers.

and theres a GTX 500 series already falling down the block

and HD 6000 series just came out of no were ALREADY,

To many video cards are coming out.

and in return, its barly for a 20% performance increase, so its bullshit, but it is better.

Nice to know they reworked the memory controller and got it to run more efficient. Looks like a winner on nvidia's hands if its not priced over $450

While I would normally agree with you on both of those statements..... Semi accurate has been fairly accurate as of late.

When the 5000 series released they were correct on specs and performance. When the GTX 400 series released they were also correct on it's performance and it's downside.

When the GTX 460 released they did praise the card saying it was great also they were correct on the performance on the GF104 too.

So far they have been correct on the 6000 series as well.

While I do agree their views at semi accurate are very on sided....I will also say that if you look past that part they have had their information correct as of late.

I totally agree with you on this.I had the GTX 470 soon after the release,but I wanted better performance,so I waited until the GTX 480 drops on price and got that one.And believe me or not,or at least my experience was like that it wasnt true that the GTX470 has better thermal performance than GTX480.so Im quite happy with mine...and now there is a GTX580 coming so soon?this product update policy is made to make those who like to have top performace,feel that they've just lost it...I mean why they just dont fine tune every product in every aspect?everybody would be happy to wait longer for a new line of product if the actual would be as good as possible.And to be honest both the red and the green team are in the terms of new technologies and functions not pulling out much.how could they right?in such a short time..

I would take any Nvidia card over an AMD card currently, even if the AMD card was slightly faster. Like say if the 6970 is 10% quicker than a 580, I would go 580. From my experience coming from a 5870 to a 480, Nvidia drivers are more stable, latest games are better supported on Nvidia hardware, the CP is 100x better than the CCC, power management sucks on AMD cards, with Nvidia at least you have an option to configure whether you want power management active in games or not. Overall AMD has decent hardware but IMO they are let down by poor drivers and software when compared to Nvidia, that is enough reason to take an Nvidia card over AMD even if it's slower.

By the way congrats on your GTX480 core speed.mine is showing artifacts over 810 core,so Im just keeping it at 800 perfectly stable..but maybe its because Im too high on shaders or/and memory...what are yours?

Like say if the 6970 is 10% quicker than a 580, I would go 580. From my experience coming from a 5870 to a 480, Nvidia drivers are more stable, latest games are better supported on Nvidia hardware, the CP is 100x better than the CCC, power management sucks on AMD cards, with Nvidia at least you have an option to configure whether you want power management active in games or not. Overall AMD has decent hardware but IMO they are let down by poor drivers and software when compared to Nvidia, that is enough reason to take an Nvidia card over AMD even if it's slower.
