Thoughts on this Rig?

Could you tell me what do you think of the following build performance/overall quality wise?

The PC will be primarily used for gaming, multi-tasking and the like. I would also like to OC the CPU to around 4.2Ghz or so.

CPU: Intel Core i7-950 Tray.
CPU Cooling: Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme+2 Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-15 Fans.
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R.
SSD: G.Skill Phoenix Pro 60GB.
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB.
Video Card: GTX 580 SLI or HD6970 CFX - Not sure which yet.
RAM: Corsair DDR3 6144MB (2048MBx3) 1600Mhz CL 7-8-7-20 XMS3.
DVD-RW: Samsung SH-S223 X22.
Case. CoolerMaster HAF 932.
PSU: Seasonic X-850 850W.

Thank you.

Edit: I am getting Noctua's NH-D14 as a CPU cooler instead of the TRUE. Should I keep the stock fans on it or replace to the Scythe GT AP-15s?

Those specs look pretty solid to me! Keep the Noctua fans and go with the 580SLI.

I'm thinking you might want to beef up that PSU, and I wouldn't make a decision on the GPUs until the 6970s are actually released.

For the PSU, I would recommend a 950-1000W or higher Corsair HX or AX, or an Enermax Revolution 85+.

I would also be inclined to say wait for the 6970 to be released and see how it performs in comparison to its price.

580 SLI or 6970 CF need a more powerful cpu
upgrade your selected psu
or stay with only a single card

PSU is fine, if you budget 250w for proc+other little stuff, you will still have 300w for each GPU, which is more than enough. Bump your ram up to 12GB and make a ramdisk, and then get the second 580 down the road, or if you are going AMD, whatever you are going. Also, get a better board, (UD5?) it might have more fancy features like better voltage regulation etc. I am not too sure about that, someone else please confirm.

The higher end Gigabyte boards do have more MOSFETs, aka power phases.

The UD3R has 8 CPU phases. I would suggest this as a minimum for overclocking.

The UD5 has 12 CPU phases. If it fits into your budget, I would suggest this as well.

As far as a PSU, you're going to want a beefier PSU in my opinion. If you decide you want a 6990 (dual GPU) and potentially another down the road, or a GTX 585 or two, you don't want to have to buy another PSU. You're going high end components for all out gaming.

Also, calculate your program installation usage to determine how large of an SSD you want. I need at least a 100GB for my gaming rig. Don't forget Windows, Office, and all your games, as well as any other larger programs you'll be putting on it. Message me for a great way to set up your SSD with an additional HDD for the best speed and SSD life.

What do you mean by CPU phases?

The SSD will only be used for the OS and crucial programs, so 60GB is enough. Games will be on the 1TB HDD.

Power comes in the form of AC current, which is turned into DC current by the PSU. The PSU then sends this current to the mobo, which further "refines" it so that its stable, and the number of times the current is "filtered" is equivalent to the number of phases. Cleaner current equates to more overclock. Not the best explaination, but I think it conveys the message.

Isn't the X58A-UD3R enough?

Of course it is. Think of it as you driving in a Jaguar and Ferrari F430. Both goes fast, really fast, but Ferrari will go much faster in the end. Same case here, the UD3R can support nice overclocks, but when it comes to head-to-head, the UD5 is going to stomp it. Or that's what I have been led to believe. Also, the better board have better parts in it, something which will not show itself until your heavy OC takes its toll on the parts.

that looks nice, from board to HDD, i agree if you plan to oc it its better if you place better fan, double fans (maybe) or you need to plan water cooling? psu that support bout 1000 watt on ride, ssd 60 gig thats kinda enough just for saving operating system on it.

What's with people wanting super high powered psu? And water cooling takes a lot of maintenance, it is not suitable for everyone.

Man, if you don't know yet, WIZZARD made it possible to power 350W (or even more maybe) a single 580. Going to 700W only for the cards and you only have 150W left. Always when building a new pc you must have at least 100W more (over the overclocking possibilities) and this is recommended.
After all you must thing that if all are suggesting smth and you are not, than you must have smth wrong in it, otherwise give proofs!

Don't be ridiculous, it only took 324w each, or 650w total. 200w is plenty for a nice overclock, and even then, you will need to stress the hell out of the graphics card just to see that amount of power consumption. 224w for normal use, that's 200w buffer for you. And you only keep 100w buffer if you are using a shit power supply, Seasonics can deliver up to and most of the time well over rated wattage continuously.

Its nice to have a PSU to support it, but its completely unnecessary and will add extra cost.

i7 980X is nice, but I don't need that much processing power (as of now anyway), so its completely unnecessary. The same could not be said 2 weeks ago though :/

Wow man!
Looks like you should be the first one to suggest a better PSU!!!
Anyway, that supercomputer is not needed if you do that by using your brain
