Anyone that values their privacy stays away from Facebook and all that social networking tomfoolery. I am one of those individuals. Last.fm is the only such site that I tolerate because it's music not user centric and is good at what it does. There are plenty of reasons why one should keep their virtual self as separated as possible from the real self, tinfoil hat or not.

I agree however that this would be a good way to get TPU even more popular. Thumbs up on that idea.

Like button tracks you everywhere

I have a Facebook account and I deactivated it, because it frankly wasn't that useful and I don't like all the privacy invasions from them.

There's a much more insidious reason not to have it though: it tracks all visitors to a site, whether Facebook users or not. And by that I mean your surfing habits all over the web:

Quote:
A researcher from a Dutch university is warning that Facebook's 'Like This' button is watching your every move.

Arnold Roosendaal, who is a doctoral candidate at the Tilburg University for Law, Technology and Society, warns that Facebook is tracking and tracing everyone, whether they use the social networking site or not.

Roosendaal says that Facebook's tentacles reach way beyond the confines of its own web sites and subscriber base because more and more third party sites are using the 'Like This' button and Facebook Connect.

But data about the user is sent to Facebook regardless of whether the Like button is actually activated.

Which is all quite scary - but not too surprising, given Facebook's reputation for snooping on its registered users.

What becomes really scary is realising how Facebook can track your movements even if you haven't signed up to its fake-friend collection service for lonely teens and sad divorcees.

Even if you don't have a Facebook account, you are far from immune from prying eyes, as Roosendaal explains:

"When a user does not have a Facebook account, there is no cookie and no user ID available. In this case, an HTTP GET request for the 'Like' button doesn't issue a cookie.

"However, when a site is visited which includes Facebook Connect, this application issues a cookie. From that moment on, visits to other websites which display the 'Like' button result in a request for the Like button from the Facebook server including the cookie."

Which means Facebook has swiped another batch of valuable data without asking for permission.

When you consider that 40 million unique visitors ended up on a site using Facebook Connect in a single month in March 2009, and that these particular cookies have a two-year expiry date, that ads up to a lot of user data flying around looking for a home.

"Based on the cookie, the entire web behaviour of an individual user can be followed," says Roosendaal. "Every site that includes some kind of Facebook content will initiate an interaction with the Facebook servers, disclosing information about the visited web site together with the cookie."

So you find yourself dragging all of this invisible data round with you like a piece of toilet paper stuck to your shoe, even though you have never even been to Facebook, let alone signed up.

This directly opposes the "Internet Privacy" link in my sig.

I'll admit that I have a facebook account but there is literally no information about me there and I only created it because of a few old friends that I'd lost contact with.

Also Don, you should be concerned about being outed on facebook. (I keed, I keed )

Don't say you didn't know that you can categorize people and hence only share what's private with private family members? Read this. The key is to categorize people. That way only your TPU friends will see photos of your rig, and only your closest family will see those of you hugging great-aunt Emma and not vice versa
Heck I've got photos which I just keep there and the setting is that "only me" can view them.

Regarding tracking/snooping -- so what?
Google does it, Microsoft does it, Yahoo does it...
As long as I don't start receiving spam emails from sites I know I encountered through facebook I'm not gonna start to worry.

On a more serious note - a lot of websites have got a facebook like or link button. Some sites or forums you can even log in through facebook, making everything so much easier even if you originally had a different password for that site. (Bethesda Game Studio forums springs to mind). If it doesn't involve a lot of work or doesn't lag the forum I'd be all for it.

This privacy thing isnt as big a deal as people think. You can manage your privacy settings if you have an account. NOT only that but a like button will do nothing to exploit you to the WWW. It tracks you though!!!0ne1! ok, So their are numerous cookies being transfered from TPU to the FB servers (because floating around looking for a home is rediculous. cookies arent sentient beings they dont wonder the web with a suite case.) what does it share if you dont have an account? your TPU sn? or the fact that you visit this site? if your that worried about privacy then I have some bad news. I can google any of your SN's and it will tell me every TPU post thread and visitor message you have ever been involved in as well as time stamps and cache incase you deleted it.

What if this measure is implemented... so:

--Those who are against it have the option of not clicking this famous like button, so they won't.

--Those who were in favour can click it, and they will.

Everybody will be happy, no?

_________________________________________

What I mean is that arguing on the merits/advantages/disadvantages/pros/cons of facebook is not of topic here and is irrelevant to this thread.
It's just a button we're speaking about. And if implemented, no one will be forcing anybody else to click it and 'expose' any privacy.

Not being much of a Facebook guru, what exactly would the buttons do?
We already have the "Bookmark and Share" feature which appears to tie to over 300 places.

Say I'm on facebook, and I click the 'like' button on CNN news' site, or on Wikileaks' site or on ATI's or Nvidia's.
From there onwards, everytime CNN, Wikileaks, ATI or Nvidia post any update it will automatically be visible on my facebook with a link to click if I want to read all the details.
If I think that CNN's link (or TPU's for all that matters) might interest someone else who is not subscribed to CNN (or registered on TPU) I can share that link with them, hence getting more traffic to the site.

The bolded part, and the update explanation I gave to Kreij. ie if one 'like' a review then any updates will be automatically added to one's facebook page to read and if they want also share with other people.
If one doesn't want to read them, just don't click the link on your facebook.
If one doesn't even want this, don't click the 'like' button on TPU.
If one doesn't like facebook don't get a facebook account at all.

Fact is as I mentioned earlier arguing on the pros/cons of facebook is not of topic here and is irrelevant to this thread.
It's just a button we're speaking about. And if implemented, no one will be forcing anybody else to click it and 'expose' any privacy.

I approve of this idea, it will generate interest among a person's Facebook friends and all this privacy crap is annoying. I have my profile set to friend's only for everything, and only accept friend requests from people I know. You're probably doing it wrong.
