Though it's not really indicative of whether it can unlock to a 470 or not, the picture on newegg indeed has all the memory chips needed. Crazy good deal if this card can unlock.

I think the pic on newegg is probably not representitive of what you will actually get. It is more than likely an early sample provide to newegg so they could take pictures of the card, since it has the "Not For Resale" sticker on it instead of the standard warranty sticker. I would guess the actual retail cards have the memory removed.

I thought you had to pull the cooler to confirm that all of the mem chips are intact? They all look the same from the PCB backside. Even the missing chips had solder points on the PCB.

No need to pull the cooler, if the components are actually on the back of the PCB then it is a pretty safe bet that the memory chips are there as well, if they are just blank solder pads then the chips aren't there.

I made a handy guide:

is it just me or do they look the same, with perhaps different materials used hence the different look..

Nope, they are definitely different. The one on the left has just the blank solder pads, and the one on the right has resistors/capacitors soldered on those pads. It helps if you click to make the picture full size, and it definitely is easy to tell when you actually have the card in front of you.

It is easier to see if you look at where it is labelled C946 and C985. Those are the bigger components and it is easier to see that it is missing on the left and there is a component there on the right.

If you look at J502 and C946 you will notice the small caps.

bought one of these exact cards when it was on sale the last time for this price at the egg(might have been 145 I think). It was the 8 chip one when I took the cooler off though

With the card it is going to be a craps shoot, but I would say they probably won't unlock.
