Galactic civilizations 2, Civilization 4. Both are very extensive, easily moddable and offer endless replayability. The Supreme Commander Beta also seems very promising, that's for 2007 though.

All those shooters are basically more of the same.

HOMM5 was ok as well yes. Didn't try the expansion yet. It's still not HOMM3 though, HOMM3 remains the best HOMM game.

I'm not sure they all came out in 2006 but those gave me the most fun this year

Agree! if only 5 with its graphics could match the gameplay of 3

Yep, it's the next one. Very similar in general but I do think it's better. I've only played Rome and Medieval so I can't comment about the series as a whole, but those two are definately amazing, two of the best games ever. The graphics are brilliant even on my specs, but the gameplay is even better.

I was considering RoL but it didn't have a long enough life span for me - and some of the units were ridiculously powerful and owned everything!

Darkstar one was decent. Though it becomes very repeative quickly. It's way too easy as well. Just max the turrets that fire automatically, if you have problems tracking enemies turrets will kill them off, no matter where they are.

I prefer Frontier: Elite 2, which the makers obviously liked as well.
