The BEST game story ever

Alright guys, I was just thinking, what games do you think have the best developed story ever (not the best game) created for a game? Hmmm... tough question, especially for younger players, since they are not so familiar with the goodies before 2000.
If I am to think this through, and categorize, I would say something like this:
DeusEx for best 1st person game (maybe the best overall...)
Descent: Freespace(1+2), best space simulator story ever
The Longest Journey (1+2), best story for an adventure/puzzle game
Starcraft or C&C: Tiberian Sun....hmm, cannot decide which is best for a strategy game
and Mass Effect series or KOTOR series...for 3rd person adventure games........difficult indeed!!

What do you think??

I vote for Erik the Unready for funniest adventure game story. It's old, but it's a classic.

Wow, young crowd here. Also, the thread is about stories, not games in general.

Anyway, I pretty much agree with the original poster. I would like to add the Monkey Island games to the list, as well as Full Throttle.

Oh, and Planescape: Torment and Anachronox to the RPG side.

LOL! I don't think there are more than 100 people in this world remembering that game, hehe! Excellent choice!

Legacy of kain series has the most complex and interesting story among all the games I played.
Next come Dragon age: origins and Mass Effect, also Fable: the lost chapters.

Bioware has some good writers like David Gaider and Drew Karpyshyn. the Video Game industry doesn't have the pen talent Hollywood has. Mafia wasn't an original story it was a cliche.

Borderlands! The main story, Zombie Island, and Knoxx were hilarious and extremely well written. "It's time for my pound of flesh!" A Shakespeare allusion in the middle of killing burning psychos? It doesn't get much better than that. The "story" in a traditional sense was pretty damn solid too.
