no it has to have power or it will not even detect it,
it will also keep the computer from starting if it has no power

It's telling you it's not going to work without the pcie power supply with the fan spinning at 100% and a red light.

There are some "green" versions of the 9800 that do not require the pcie connector, perhaps that would suit you better?

Do you mean 6-pin connector? I guess it is not fully working until you plug it in. So you cannot detect if it is working, because it is not, until you plug it in.

Only not working when you connect 6 pin connectors? By not working you mean PSU fan not spinning? What does it do, Does it spins for a sec, and then turns off or what?

Sounds like a dead 9800. RMA it if it's still covered.

It means that Graphics card is consuming too much power, and PSU immediately turns itself off. This can be because of
your Graphics card is dead, causing short circuit.

Short circuit can be caused if Voltage regulating Mosfets were overheating and heat destroyed them. To repair you need very good soldering skills, multimeter and replacement mosfets, which can be expensive.

Oven baking helps only if GPU processor has bad soldering contacts (dry soldering). But in your case current flows uncontrolled thru dead Mosfets. Dead component is dead component, you cannot revive that by reflow techniques.

I'm not saying clean it, I'm saying return it for a replacement to XFX IF it's still covered under warranty.

225w for a 9800gtx are you for real a 9800gtx probably consumes 100-120w max

OP try an 4pin>pcie 6pin adaptor your PSU should handle that system easily
