Nvidia to counteract the 6990 with GTX590

Quote:
The new graphics card comes with two GF110 GPUs and NVIDIA has chosen to go all in with the shaders. It goes with the top model of GF110 with 512 CUDA cores, which results in 1024 CUDA cores in total and 2 x 384-bit memory bus.

it's highly unlikely that thay are going to be able to compete price wise with AMD, thing thing is gonna be £££££ (or $$$$$ wherever u come from)

but it IS gonna be faster fo sho' and thay will need some nasty ass cooling to be able to get that thing OC'd.

but surely power consumption is going to be.... whoa, I cant even imagine, is gotta be restricted under stress testing surely... surely - even std gaming load no?

they're gonna have to redo the limiter and lock it out better, can you imagine turning it off with 2 GF110's , also the 6990 is 1 8 pin and 1 6 pin

its going to be crazy if they pull it off!

I honestly think they should do 2 GTX570's instead. Keep the heat down a bit and less power. honestly thats just my thoughts

If they drop the clock freqs (like the article eluded to them doing) then they may be able to get in the 400w - 450w range for max. consumption.

If enough people OC the card it should add to global warming, which is fine as it's a little chilly here in Cheeseland.

I'm not exactly an AMD fan, but the link above says it only uses 1 8pin and 1 6 pin connectors.

global warming isnt just heat. its from energy use too which puts out carbon. soooooooooo! yay for gtx590 power consumption.

still, this card like the 6990 is gonna be a benchmarkers delight, there isn't a game worthy of these cards yet, maybe 2012 will have drivers tweaked and smoothed before we even sniff the 1st game that will give these cards the sweat.

Then again, they are gonna give the multi-diplay w/high res AA users a hard on, but i reckon they are well within the minority

Leaked picture of the GTX 590 cooler.

I hope this thing rocks. I don't want either company to get complacent.

Ah, I can see space for my sausages to fry

If they have been binning the chips and keeping the good ones for the GTX590, and do all the standard things like downclocking, then I would imagine that the power requirements will be about 350-400w mark (given that 1 GTX590 is ~250w). Not bad for a (potential) beast.

thats wont be the cooler though i can tell already. that is a terrible design. they already said in the article it'll be a cooler like hte GTX295 one one beastly fan in the middle. and the heatsinks will most likely be vapor chamber cooling

Ppl that are able to afford such cards will most likely choose an alternative solution

fixed, but on a side note = HD5970 was two 5870 chips downclocked to 5850 speeds i.e 725/1000. Now the 5970's can do in excess of 900/1200 clocks so the GTX590 has the potential to be a serial rapist of benchmarks and power stations as serious overclocking looks to be very likely

Not gonna change my 5970 tho, it has another year+ life at 900/1200 max temp 60degC and by that time, yep I'm gonna say it, we will have another gen card to drool over

i am gonna feel sick tho when i see the HD6990 Vs GTX590 reviewes with benchies

You know it occurs to me the 6990 may still be really close to this in performance, or even with. As we've seen the 69xx series in xfire has been known to catch up to 580s in sli, and I'd imagine nvidia will have to scale the clock speed back more than ati will. Though I suppose they could get crazy/desperate and say to hell with power consumption, throw 3 8pins on there and go full speed. Would still sell. Even if it's a very small number of units they can still claim to their fans and investors that they have the fastest card. A crown nvidia hates to lose.

Hmm..... If it hits £500* mark and EVGA have it on the step up program..... I think i have till March sometime.... unless step up is a USA only thing? No, no, no...My 580 is good enough.

Still, can't wait for the dual card top dog battle. T'will verily leave the earth scorched....

I demand a 6990 versus 590 gfx showdown review from W1zz.

* fair chance Nvidia will sell at a loss just for e-peen. They'll make about 10 cards - there is no profit in this beast.

Quote:

Yeah, but thats because the 6970 has 2gb and fares very well at 2560 res. If the 6990 is 4gb, it'll be quite the power hungry monster. But for the sake of absolutely bonkers 'king of the gfx card' crown, i hope they do make it a 4gb card
